        Hello!

I am looking forward to adopting my first rabbit, but I need some help identifying this rabbit species on PetFinder. The shelter thinks he’s a Blanc de Hotot rabbit, but I was kinda leading towards a New Zealand. He is a baby, so it may be hard to identify. Thanks!

I have a New Zealand white and first of all theyre an amazing breed !!
Just by looking at the pic he has very similar charactaristics to by bun for example the ears are really big and he has the same fuzzy hairs between his ears. His coat looks the same as when i got her at a young age , but he still may be a mix im not quite suree.

It’s hard to tell sometimes when they are young. You might have to wait for him to grow into his body to see. My guess would be New Zealand or New Zealand mix though.

Since it’s a Doberman Rescue that rescued him, it’s likely they have no idea what breed he really is or could be – to be honest most of it is a guessing game for rescues and shelters. Nevertheless, he’s adorable and I think he looks like a New Zealand White as well.

I agree about NZW’s they are an amazing breed that is sadly too often overlooked by rabbit owners.

Don’t NZW’s have ruby eyes though? This bunny looks like he has dark eyes on my monitor.

He’s definitely not a hotot. They don’t have any colour on their ears. They only colour they have is dark around the eyes.

So many bunnies that come into shelters are mix breeds. It can be hard to tell exactly what. Sometimes when they are full grown you might get a better idea.

                He’s a cutie!

Not a hotot. New Zealand maybe a mix with New Zealand. And they come with both dark eyes, or ruby eyed varieties. I personally think the dark eyed variety is prettier.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I noticed right away that this rabbit wasn’t a hotot. I had saw the large ears and the little hairs near the ears and thought right away it was a New Zealand mix.

I also I didn’t mention that his description said he was born on May 30th, 2015, so he’s almost 3 months old.

Could be a New Zealand mix. Definitely not a pure NZW, as he doesn’t have ruby eyes and the tips of his ears are colored, which a pure NZW wouldn’t have, but his ears and the little ear hairs are definitely very New Zealand!

I’ve seen some (guaranteed) NZW-NZR mixes present with dark eyes and a white coat, but the color of the tips of his ears would suggest that there’s something non-NZ in his heritage as well, and his face doesn’t really scream NZ to me. He also looks quite small to be a NZ, as they should be upwards of 1,5kg at three months old.

(New Zealand Whites are great, I totally agree, guys… but nothing can compete with a good ol’-fashioned New Zealand Red! … I may be a tad biased.)

I’ve been strongly thinking about it, although their might be a bit more waiting to go. But he is definitely a strong choice!
