        Hey guys
I wanted to write about this because it seems important.
I am wondering if any knows if a diet too high in oxalic acid can cause poop abnomalities and therefore gut problems?
I recently realised that my Boonie’s diet was high in oxalic, so I weaned her off that diet to a better one, and immediately I noticed her poop improved.
She used to have at least 1 rejected cecotrope per day, and it wasn’t properly developed, just a soft poop ball.
But now she isn’t doing that anymore. And also her actual poop just looks healthier overall.
I never thought that oxalic acid could affect her poop but it seems like it has.
        So what do people think?

I’ve never heard of oxalic acid causing weird poops. What were you feeding before exactly?

Things like spinach, oregano, thyme, Rosemary, along with other low oxalic foods every day

Perhaps one of those was “too rich”, causing an overproduction of cecals? Different bunnies react differently to different veggies.

                Interesting
Well if that’s the case it would have to be the spinach cos I have given her small amounts of the others since but no spinach

It wasn’t only extra cecals though. They werent grape like at all. And She also did some small poop occasionally.

Hmm, I think I remember someone (a BB member) whose bunny would get poopy butt from spinach and such.

Don’t get me wrong, feeding only veggies high in oxalate isn’t good. So it’s good that you’re switching things up. From what I understand, oxalic acid bonds with calcium and this can cause kidney and bladder problems (crystals, etc.) in rabbits since rabbits excrete much of the calcium they consume through their urine. I haven’t heard of it causing intestinal issues, so that’s why I suggested perhaps it was simply one of the veggies causing the problem.

Well yes u may be right, so Boonie is never having spinach again that’s for sure

I hope I haven’t caused her any bladder or kidney problems, her urine seems normal so I don’t think I have

I’m not sure what the short-term effects are, if any. I imagine she will be fine though.

Glad to hear it. Don’t forget to introduce new stuff slowly if you decide to try new things. If spinach causes a problem then there may be other things that do too.

Yes I’ve pretty much worked out her diet now.
She was doing some egg shaped poop for a few days but it seems to have cleared up now.
Every day that passes on the new “low oxalic acid and no spinach” diet, she seems better
