        Hi all,

Ralph was neutered on Monday, we took him for a check up today (Thursday), and they’ve said one side isn’t healing as well as the other . I’ve gone into panic mode!!!
They suggested giving him a salt bath, I was wondering what the best way to do this was, as I don’t want to stress him getting his coat all wet. Should we roll him on his back and do it locally to the side that isn’t healing as well? Any advise would be appreciated.

Also if anyone else has any tips for helping him heal I would be appreciative! I have been leaving him for some healing time as I read I should leave the cuddling for a week or so but it’s been killing me .

        Thanks

I’m not quite sure what a salt-bath is, but rabbits should as a rule never be bathed. If what your vet means is more of a saline rinse of the incision you could of course do that by squirting saline solution on to the incision.
Has he been given antibiotics or some kind of ointment? Is there pus or other liquid/goo coming out of the wound?

And for the cuddling I don’t see why you shouldn’t give him some nose-and forehead rubs if he wants them.

Bunnies often don”t like to be on their backs so if you can do the saline rinse with him in one person’s lap, with a towel under him to soak up the saline, that’d be less stressful for him.

Did the vet say anything about why it might not be healing as well? Does he suspect infection? if so did you get antibiotics? Is he maybe just chewing the wound a little? My Bramble did this after his neuter and it meant it took a while to heal, but it did heal. Painkillers helped, apparently them chewing at the wound is a sign of pain.

If the vet is suggesting you clean the wound, I would definitely clean only the wound, with swabs or a clean cloth. I wouldn’t bathe your bun, for two reasons: rabbits don’t really like getting wet and if you did give him a salt bath and he then groomed himself he would be ingesting a lot of salt.

If there is no sign of infection then I wonder if it will simply heal on its own in its own time, perhaps one side is more irritated than the other and that explains the difference?
