Reading through the forums I know that some buns experience post spay behavior changes, but can it start as soon as 1 week after?  Our bun was spayed exactly 1 week ago today and she is acting crazy!  Prior to the surgery she was relatively calm but today shes so hyper … furiously digging at the sofa and the carpet and flitting from one activity to the next like she’s being chased.    Tonight while trying to dig the cover off the sofa she was doing this thing where she would push her body forward with her back feet and slide her body across the area she was trying to dig up. Even her eyes are wide open with a wild look.  She still lets us pet her, but whereas petting used to relax her, she can only sit still for a minute before she jumps back up like something bit her in the butt. It’s like having a toddler in the house again! Any idea how long this might last? I want my sweet bun back.

A week after would be perfectly normal for a hormonal surge after a desexing. How long it lasts is not possible to tell, I’ve read it may last up to 8 weeks, but more commonly one to a few weeks.

What you need to do is make sure this behavior isn’t pain-driven. How does the incision wound look? How is her poop (amount, size, shape)? Is she eating and drinking? It does sound hormonal, some kind of frantic nesting-behavior, but the wild look and the inability to sit still could still indicate pain.

Her incision looks good and she is eating, drinking, pooping as normal. I think you are exactly right that it is a nesting behavior. She only acts this way in the living room … especially on the couch. I have it covered with blankets and she is obsessed with pulling on them and trying to dig through them. She gets so worked up that when she finally takes a rest, her heart is beating so fast that her ears shake.  I made her a digging box but she wants nothing to do with it, shes too focused on the couch.  When she plays out on our screened porch, she is fine.  I might have to find a way to block off the living room until this passes.
