Hi, I have a 5 month old female lionhead. She was super tame, and used to being handled etc. Yesterday I went to put food in her cage and she lunged and bit me (broke the skin) and today I went to pick her up for her free play time (I let her loose in the house to run for a few hours per day, she has a large cage but I like to let her roam free) and she kind of growled/groaned and lunged- it didn’t seem super aggressive but like she’s nervous of me now.. I’m not sure what to do, I don’t want to make her more nervous.. once I pick her up she’s fine but I’d like her to be comfortable with me going in to pick her up. I was advised by the breeder not to have her spayed, I didn’t ask why but I’d like to avoid that if possible, too. She’s a sweet bunny I’m just not sure why she’s spooked/territorial all of a sudden.

        thanks!

This sounds hormonal, and her behavior is perfectly normal for a girl bunny hitting “puberty”. You should look into having her spayed. It’s the best thing for her health (uterine cancer is very common in unspayed does) and will likely help with behavioral issues. But she will still become an adult bunny and may not be as cuddly as she was as a baby – though some adult bunnies are.

What Bam said-and I’d like to add:

Breeders are breeders-and not animal health professionals. All you need is two animals to become a breeder, and does not make them a source of info. Just because the breeder advised not to spay is no reason not to-and in fact if you read through this forum and see the info breeders have given, you’ll see you probably don’t want to follow any-breeders often keep rabbits on metal grid floors, and advise giving seeds and nuts for food! Not the way we want to keep our pets at all

Read here for more info on what you are experiencing https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/tabid/53/CategoryID/10/PID/940/Default.aspx

If you have a vet, schedule your spay-and if not start looking. If you have trouble finding one you can post here as we have members from all over. If you don’t know what to look for in a vet, read this http://rabbit.org/faq-how-to-find-a-good-rabbit-vet/
