My bun has been sneezing off and on for a month I took him to the vet and she said it might be a infection or maybe allergies so she gave me antibiotics (enrofloxacin) to give my little bun twice a day for 2 weeks. More than two weeks past and it gotten worse. Does anyone know what this might be? it’s only on one side of his nostrils its very puffy and seems to have spread. He sneezes white snot and they dry up and causes his skin to get irritated and bleed. He is also loosing fur around his nose from it. I will make another vet appointment ASAP I’m just curious on what this might be I looked online for what it might be and nothing sounds like what he has.

        (sorry this image is flipped)

This is how his nostril looks compared to his normal nostril

Mmm. Maybe book in for a recheck with the vet. Perhaps something is stuck in there? Hayseed or something?
Though, infection can cause swelling too… The swelling makes things worse because he can’t get the infected gunk out very well.

Tooth root overgrowth can sometimes cause these issues.

          Adorable bunny!

I just read your post from end of March.
Is this the same bunny that had the scab above the eye? How was that resolved?

His doctor checked up his nose to see if he had any signs of a object being lodged in there she also mentioned a tooth overgrown and checked his teeth and she said that looked good. But she also mentioned that since he is young (9 months old) that he shouldn’t have a tooth overgrown but its always a possibility.

The scabs around his eye is taken care of. I took him back to the vet and he was diagnosed with syphilis and was treated for 3 weeks and he was completely cured. He was also sneezing around that time but he didn’t have this inflamed nostril and he had stopped after the treatments my vet put him on.

That’s good. I had wondered if there was a relapse & if he got a lesion inside his nose.

He was treated with penicillin g for the syphilis?

If that’s the case what would the treatment be for that? And how does a vet diagnose a bunny with that?

I had to tell the vet if it was syphilis on the second visit since the first visit she gave him the same antibiotics as she did now and it didn’t do anything. And yes he was treated with penicillin g once a week for three weeks.

The lesions I’m referring to are the ones that occur with rabbit syphilis.
Or were you asking about root overgrowth?

The 3 weeks of PenG shots is probably the minimum length of time for treating syhp.
                    Often 4-6 weeks is needed.
Was your vet aware the sneezing cleared up last time along with the scabs?

This ^ might be unrelated to the current problem.

I think a recheck is needed regardless because the abx the vet prescribed hasn’t helped his nasal infection. I can understand why she put him on enrofloxacin first. It’s often the 1st they’ll go to as it’s low risk.
Annoying (and expensive) though if she saw it didn’t help his respiratory symptoms last time yet prescribed it again.

It may be that the 3 weeks of pen g didn’t get to the root of the problem so the spirochete a weren’t all killed off. They would then start to multiply once the pen g had worn off, and the syphilitic wounds could then crop up elsewhere (nostril). I think you should discuss this with your vet. The abc she gave clearly is ineffective against this.
We’d be very happy for updates on this.
I wish you and your bunny many ((((((((healing vibes))))))))

I agree. Check with your vet. Jerseygirl is right in that 3 shots may not have been enough.

Thank you for your help! I have a appointment for him tomorrow and will discuss about this with her. My bunny has not gotten better since his last appointment and treatment. His nose is now building up brown crust around the nostril with white little specks. I hope my bunny gets better soon.

Mange mite is another possibility if there are crusts developing.
                              Good luck at the vet!

My rabbit just peeled off the syphilis scab he was bleeding a lot. I called the vet and she told me to put pressure on it.

He stopped bleeding now its just puffy and red. His head is twitching and shaking. Does this mean he is in pain?

He also started sneezing again after he peeled off the scab.

It probably was painful for him, you can perhaps rinse it with some cool saline (eyewash for humans will do) and if your vet is open or when they open you could call them and ask for a prescription for a painkiller, it’s also good to have if sth like this happens again. You should be able to get a prescription for Metacam without taking your bun in. But if the twitching doesn’t stop soon, you should call your vet about it.
Poor little bun. Many (((((healing vibes)))))

Is he twitching because he’s trying to sneeze?
