Our 10 1/2 week old dwarf Netherland bunny had to be rushed to the emergency hospital tonight. She was fine when we left the house about8:55pm then when we got home at 10:00pm she wasn’t moving and her head was titled and she couldn’t walk and her front legs felt like jello. Rushed her to the ER and they got her stable and she’s up sittijg on her legs instead of laying down all sprawled out like she was having a seizure. Doctor said her glucose level was dangerously low and the fact that she had a fat belly she though there was fluid build up at first but when she did an ultrasound a second time she didn’t see fluid. Gave her a medicine that should move everything through and hopefully she will be better in the morning. Doctor needs to find out exactly what is wrong and said when we first came in she thought it was more bad news to come but after we left an hour and a half later she was more balanced now. I hope she pulls through…. This is my first bunny and my finances 2nd and even though we have had her for only 2 1/2 weeks I have grown pretty attached to her and love holding her and petting her. thanks for hearing me rant

Just called the vet before I’m ready to get some sleep and she said that she had another incident where she was laying on her side so she gave her more glucose medicine at a higher dose and now she’s up more alert and even eating now!! I asked her if it’s more positives then negativeness now and she said yes definitely but she needs to figure out why her glucose level keeps going down. She said it could be cause she’s a baby and is just having troubles keeping it stable after it was lost but she will Figure it out

I looked in your other thread, the parasite your other vet mentioned sounds like it may be e cuniculi. That could give head tilt and wobbliness since it affects the brain. It can be treated and it must be treated. Is the ER vet aware of this parasite?

Everything is more serious with very young and very old animals (just as with people), So glad you got her to the ER.

Sending her and you so many vibes ((((((((( baby bunny)))))))))

I told the vet about the parasite but I can’t remember the name so at least she knows. She said she is going to do more blood tests also to figure out everything.

Another update! Doctor said they want to keep her through out the day and monitor her. She’s eating up a storm now and is stable and a lot better. Got her temperature back to normal and her stomach is not had hard and a lot more soft which is good. It could of been the pellets we were feeding her because they were for 6 months and up we didn’t know. Doctor said that they want to take her off the glucose supplement and if she stays stable then she will come home with medicine for a bit. If not and she has passing out episodes again they would have to put her down . But doctor said a lot more positive then negative!!

Bam is right about E Cuniculi. It can be nasty. We lost our 6 month old rabbit to this in April. It first presented acutely as head tilt. She spent 3 nights in the hospital and seemed to be doing much better so she came home with 6 different medications and Critical Care. We gave her supportive care for 2 weeks and during that time she had days where we thought she was on the road to recovery but then would be worse then ever the next day. We made the painful decision to euthanize her when she deteriorated rapidly after the second week.

If you haven’t read up on E Cuniculi I would recommend doing so. This parasite is found in about 80% of domesticated rabbits so a blood test will almost definitely come back positive. What the vet needs to look for is a high titer. This will determine the course of treatment. Some rabbits respond very well but unfortunately others do not. The treatment for this can also be dangerous for the rabbit since a side effect of the medication is like Chemo in humans and suppresses the immune system. As I learned there is very little know about rabbits and even fewer statistics out there on these diseases.

Good luck and keep us updated.
