I’m thinking about making some things for my rabbit out of paper mache. I’d like to use newspaper. Is newspaper safe for them to chew? If I use flour and water for the glue, will it be safe if he chews on it? I really want to make him a tunnel maze or something.

I saw something on Pinterest, where you put wet toilet paper on a balloon to make a kind of bowl thing, and the bottom of the bowl is round, so it rolls and stuff. I want to do it, when I get some balloons. But newspaper and paper mache are different, so I dont know if they’re safe for him.

A while back, I found this, which are instructions for DIY rabbit pinatas: http://www.therabbithouse.com/blog/…abbit-toy/. Granted, I haven’t tried it, but it does claim that flour is okay, since it’s found in rabbit pellets. Someone else is free to chime in, though!

As far as newspaper goes, I believe you should be fine, as long as it’s soy ink (which I think most use).

If you do try it, post pictures!

Thanks I’m going to try the balloon thing for sure, and I want to make a kind of tunnel maze. I’m not sure what I’ll use for the shape of the tube. I’ll need to find a larger amount of newspaper too.

Ooh, let us know how the tunnel maze goes. I’d love to try and make one. A plastic pipe would be the right shape but I’m not sure how you’d get it off. Maybe some of those tube balloons they use for making balloon animals?

I would be worried about mold. Sometimes when I would make papier mache stuff, it would get mildewy. The mildew always died off when the item dried completely, so it wasn’t really a problem for me. It could be a problem though for a rabbit who is likey going to eat some of it.

Hmm. I wonder if there’s a way I could dry it faster. Maybe dry the pieces in an oven?
