Hiya! My bun is getting neutered tomorrow morning and I was just wondering about post op care. He is normally free reign in my bedroom and spends the middle of the day under my bed. I obviously can’t let him go under there after the op as I wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on him if he was picking at the wound etc. I am planning on keeping him in his cage but the problem is that it has ramps and I know he shouldn’t be stretching or anything. Any ideas on what I should do? His cage is my old desk which I added a floor to at the bottom and some ramps to so he can move around. I’ll try to attach a picture but it’s not working on my phone.

Also, I’ve read not to use litter in the litter tray as it can stick to the wound. I usually use wood based cat litter with newspaper underneath for easy clean up. Would it be best to just use newspaper then and change it regularly?

Thanks in advance! A little worried here lol.

You will probably want to restrict his movement for the first few days, but I wouldn’t be overly paranoid about it.

As for the litter, it will probably be okay. Mine use Yesterday’s News and it wasn’t a problem for Wooly. Just clean it more often than you normally would. I would not use only newspaper because that isn’t very absorbent. You want them to be on something that absorbs their pee.

Do you think the ramps will be okay then? I’m sure he will be too tired and groggy to be going up them anyway tbh but I wanted to make sure. Thank you!

My vet recommended torn up/shredded newspaper as litter post-neuter. I think it’s because most people here use wood shavings and that really could stick to a wound.
The wounds should be small though and glued shut (sometimes 1 stitch instead of glue) and there should be no sticky fluid seeping out – if there is, sth is not right.

The only thing I would be worried about ramp-wise is him falling off because he is groggy. So maybe use something to block the upper levels off until you know he isn’t going to lose his balance.

My boy limited his own activity for the first several days after surgery. And as for litter … I am SUPER paranoid and my boy doesn’t chew so I used puppy pee pads.

Can you block off the top level of the cage to keep him from trying to climb?

I have a two story condo as well, and though my vet was comfortable with me keeping the ramp up, she recommended that I take down a tiny platform he can hop to, as she was concerned about his incision tearing. All of his necessities (food, hay, water, litter box) are on the first story, and he spent the first day and a half dozing on the first story, anyway. LBJ10 makes a good point about the grogginess, though…they are extremely out of it after the anesthesia. Is there a way you can duct tape the ramps? That’s what I was planning to do before my vet gave me the okay.

Yes, he will be groogy. Last time Yohio had full anaesthesia he fell over from meatloafing =( So pityful!
