Our Barney lost his Ema recently and has been doing some things I’ve never seen from him before. He’s become a bit aggressive and growly when out of his cage, and when in it, he’s chewing the metal bars to his cage. ALL THE TIME. He and Ema were together a few years, and unfortunately, its the second mate he’s lost in his short life. We’ve been giving him lots of attention because of his loss, and I just want to know if there’s something else we can do to help him through this. I’m also starting to wonder if he’s bonding with me? He groom’s me every chance he gets and is stuck to my side. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Aww poor Barney! Yeah I would assume the behavious change is grief. Can you get him a stuffed animal? I find they like grooming those though they don’t get groomed back. Offer the attention he’ll take, and if he’s acting aggressively let him be. Also maybe more toys or things to shred may help.

You could try a toy bunny, sometimes they’ll accept that as a surrogate.
