When Harley seems happiest he also makes a little “grunting” noise when he hops around. I have the impression  that it is a sign of happiness or contentment but don’t know. It’s very cute but I’d like to understand it better.

        Thanks in advance!

It almost sounds like he is honking. Its something males do when they go through puberty. Typically when rabbit’s are happy they will teeth pur which isn’t very loud. Have you thought about fixing your rabbit?

From what I have read, having them fixed is an important health issue so I am going to have him fixed.

Actually, the noise IS very faint. So much so that I found it hard to describe. When I spend our quality time together in the mornings he is very excited when I take him out of his cage and then runs and binkys in the bathroom when I put him down. As he moves around he make this little noise and when I pet him he stops. I really interpret it as a good noise but so many posts made it sound like he was angry or something was wrong so I thought I would throw it out there. The discrepancy may be due to my inability to accurately describe the noise.

When I get down on the floor with him he runs over and starts licking my nose and chin like crazy. He sure seems happy!

I think I hear the “teeth pur” this morning. Is that a kind of grinding the teeth. He did it while I was holding him.

Teeth purr is a soft-ish grinding of the teeth, you can’t always hear it but you can feel it in your fingers when you pet the teeth-purring bunny’s head. That’s a very happy sound =) On the other hand if a bunny chatters his teeth it is a sign of pain, but they can teeth-purr rather loudly, so there you have to go by context and general body-language.

Other sounds too have to be interpreted in context. Some bunnies make little sobbing noises when they get sth delicious to eat. It doesn’t mean sadness. An angry bunny can growl like a little dog and will often charge and box you, that way you know it’s not a happy noise. Thumping can be from fear, from joy or for attention.

Some bunnies are not vocal all all and some are very vocal.

Bam, I’m so glad that you mentioned that you can also feel a teeth purr! I was petting Hugo’s head the other day (his favorite spot!) when I felt a weird sort of vibrating. I had no idea what was going on.

Hugo was more vocal before he was neutered, though he still makes noises now. I first suspected that he was ready to be neutered when he hopped around me in a circle, making a sound like the buzz of a fly. I have heard him grunt a few times when he’s hopping around, though, so in those cases, I think he’s expressing happiness (he also grunts to express his displeasure when I bother him while he’s still waking up after his afternoon nap). He’s squeaked before when he was unhappy, but also when he was very excited. And he does make soft little squealing sounds when he’s gorging himself on pellets or eating one of his favorite treats.

Wooly grunts when he’s mad. LOL But I suppose different rabbits will vocalize for different reasons, it depends on the context and whatnot. Neither of mine tooth purr as far as I know. Leopold, however, will do one quick grind of his teeth (and you can hear it) when he is REALLY frustrated by something.

I think I know the noise you are talking about. When I’m sitting on the floor in a quiet room with my bun and shes hopping around, she sometimes makes a soft noise with each hop. I have no idea how to describe it but its obvious by the way she’s acting that its a happy noise.
