I have two rabbits, one male and one female, living in a cage together. They are about to enter sexual maturity (if not already), and I can’t get them spayed or neutered because money is a problem. I don’t want them to find and find one of them dead! Thanks!

You need to separate them, or you will have bunny babies. Do not wait until you see humping. This problem is worse than your bunnies picking fights etc. It’s not likely that they will kill each other, but they will make babies. Lots of babies.

They can’t live in the same cage anymore and they can’t meet, mating takes place in seconds so you can’t allow them to have contact until at least one of them is desexed and has healed (at least a month for a boy, sperm survives that long in their bodies even after a neuter).

If you get another cage and place the cages next to each other, make sure there is space between them, because they can mate through the bars of a cage.

Do some research and contact the local shelters or house rabbit society, they may be able to direct you to a vet that will do a payment plan or has reasonable
rates for spays and neuters. In the interim separate them as Bam has suggested otherwise you will have lots of bunnies.

Some cities also do low-cost spay/neuter clinics through shelters or rescues. If the shelter adopts out rabbits, then they likely have a vet experienced with rabbits doing the procedures. It’s worth looking into.

They will need to be separated as soon as possible…

If you’re not able to fix them, and don’t want to keep them separated for the next 10+ years, would you consider finding a new home for one?
