Hello, I am worried about my Bonnie and wondered if anyone had any advice. Firstly I am from the UK. Bonnie Boops is displaying wobbly unbalanced symptoms. The vet has checked her over twice now and can’t find anything wrong with her physically. She hops around ok but when jumping into her cage or onto something, it is like her back legs go and she loses balance so falls back on herself if that makes sense. It is quite hard to explain. She doesn’t get as excited for treats anymore, and tonight she won’t eat her veggies for dinner or much hay. She drank a small bit. I’ve got her caged so I can monitor exactly what she’s eating/pooping as I have another bunny aswell. I’ve just started treating her with Panacur (she is on her 9th day) and she has had 1 dose of Metacam prescribed by the vet incase she is in any sort of pain. I really don’t know what to do because I am thinking it is probably brain related and the vets are suggesting I take her to the exoctic vets but bearing in mind they cost £130 just for a consultation, I really can’t afford that; let alone treatment on top but I just don’t know what to do as all I want is for her to be better and fine again. I feel like I either have to just keep going as I am and hope (if it’s E.cuniculi) that she will sort herself out (btw I know it isn’t curable) or do I just face facts and take her to a specialist? I don’t know how I’d do the financial side, or else I’d be up there in a dash. It is so hard, but I don’t think the UK vets really understand Bunnys enough.

E cuniculi is curable nowadays. It used to be incurable, but it isn’t any more. Here’s info: http://www.vetsonline.com/publications/vn-times/archives/n-09-10/e-cuniculi-in-rabbitsa-a-aetiology-treatment-and-infection-control.html

If you suspect e.cuniculi, you do need her to see a vet.

We have a few UK members, they may know of some good rabbit vets in the UK, perhaps someone is in your area. I know we have a member In London, but that may not be where you are.

Thanks, I will have a look at that link. I am in Swindon (Wiltshire). I imagine these specialist vets are all going to cost a lot of money? Do you know what methods are there to treat E.cuniculi or keep it at bay? Thanks.

I believe Panacur needs to be administered daily for up to 4 weeks. It’s only been 9 days.

I took her to the vets this morning because she hasn’t eaten any hay all night and hadn’t pooped. She ate her nuggets fine for breakfast. The vet did a thorough check over her this time (better than the last!) & found loads of puss in both her ears which means Pasturella so she is on some antibiotics now for that but I am still keeping the Panacur going too incase it is also e.cuniculi. I feel so sorry for her as she must have had this for a few weeks now but nobody had picked up on it before now. I feel somewhat relieved though that at least now I might know the reason for her symptoms so I can focus on trying to get her better instead of the vets telling me she’s fine and if I’m worried to just go to the specialist.

I hope this will solve her problems! (((((((((Bonnie Boops))))))))

I’m sorry your vets didn’t pick up on this before, but better late than never.

Is your vet an exotics vet?

If you’re looking for a new vet, try the RWAF. If you become a member (something like £20 a year or so, I can’t remember specifically), and they’ll give you access to their approved vet list. Plus you get the Rabbiting On magazine, which is nice!
