Hi, my little Moxie is 5 mo old. We are waiting for her to be spade at 6 mo. She is healthy, happy and wonderful. (I worry easily and this lovely girl has me worry often hahahah.) She is free to roam the apartment – her cage is gone – lately she has been leaving single droppings of poop, here and there. Also, she smells like musky, onion and skunk…. It’s not THAT strong!
Last night while we were sleeping she jumped on my boyfriend’s pillow and started to dig on the pillow. She does this randomly and also throughout the day she seems off.

That smell would be her scent glands. Bunnies generally keep their scent glands pretty clean (they still put off that smell when they open them), but some occasionally need a little help in the cleaning department. The scent glands are located on both sides of the genitals and are like little pockets with a slit for an opening. Sometimes they are a little hard to find and are hidden by fur. They normally are clean or have a little stuff in them that looks like creamy ear wax. Unless they’re really full or the contents is dark and hardened, you really don’t need to do anything and can just let the bunny take care of things. If they are really full or have dark hardened stuff in them, you can wet a q-tip with warm water and gently clean them out — if any hardened pieces are stuck to the skin inside the scent gland, best to let a vet take care of it so you don’t risk injuring the delicate skin in there.

Oh, the sudden odd digging is likely hormones showing off. Bunnies naturally dig, but hormones can make natural behaviors magnify!

If it’s the poop that smells like that, she’s dropping a few territorial poops. Her hormones sound as if they’ve definitely kicked in.

She does this randomly and also throughout the day she seems off.

              Off? Her mood/behaviour? Appetite?

I remember when I had a single free roam girl and she reached 5 months, she would hide behind the curtains a lot. If I disturbed her, she’d growl at me. Lol

Thank you! I feel much better.  When we tried to cleaned them, once we finally got her to relax and began to search for the glands, I really couldn’t find anything.  She seemed pretty clean!  In a month she is going to get spayed so the vet lady can take care of that if needed.

no she is eating well, veggies, pallets struggling with the hay… I been spoiling her with fresh veggies and fruits so we are minimizing this so she can go back to 90%hay.

She is not hiding or looks in pain.  In the mornings when we get up for work she is happy, running around, doing binkies and all that cuteness. Seldom at random times she looks like she needs something, kinda like desperation…?

I’m really hoping that she will be much happier once we take her to get spayed.

I definitely think you are right about the hormones.  Thank you for this
