Is it normal for bunnies to eat their toenail clippings? Is it harmful to them? BunBun goes crazy when he sees me get the clippers because he loves to eat the clippings. He doesn’t like being picked up so I have to sneak under him to clip which isn’t easy when he is FRANTICALLY searching for clippings. He thinks I am giving him a yummy treat! So strange!

Can eating the clippings hurt him in any way? Has anyone ever heard of this strange behavior?

Nails are made of keratin, which is a protein.. so I don’t think they are good for bunny. What is your bunny’s diet? He might be lacking a nutrient.

He usually gets a small piece of apple or baby carrot in the morning, along with some pellets. Unlimited amount of timothy hay, which hes’ pretty good about eating. Romaine lettuce and usually some parsley at night. He also gets pellets here and there throughout the day as treats when if he comes when called or needs to be lured back to his cage, etc. Some days I’m sure he gets more pellets than he should.

I had a bunny once before and he didn’t go crazy over his nails like this guy does. When I cut his nails, he frantically searches for the pieces and eats them. If he can’t find the pieces, he tries gnawing at the freshly cut nail on his foot. Just the sight and smell of the nail clippers puts him into a crazy excited frenzy before I even cut them. Bizarre!

He otherwise seems healthy and has never been sick. He’s about 2 years old now.
