        Hi all-

I’m brand new here on the forum, though I’ve used it a lot for information in the past few months. So thank you to everyone who has already assisted me in my bunny business!

So here is my situation: I have a pretty well-bonded pair of buns at the moment. Ana and Cinna. Ana is just under 1 year old (spayed already), and Cinna is 4 months old about to be neutered this week. I’ve had them both now for about 2 months and they’ve bonded quite well. At this point I’m not sure what to do with Cinna after his surgery. Do I separate them or do I put them back together? At the moment, they have a whole room that they roam around in, plus a “cage area”. They share everything.

I am able to create a temporary enclosure for Cinna if he needs to be separated from Ana while he recovers. Everything I’ve read so far only talks about keeping them separated after surgery for a while BEFORE trying to bond them. I can’t find anything about what to do with an already bonded pair.

Does anyone have any advice? Do I keep them separated after he gets snipped and for how long?

        Thanks so much in advance!

You should keep them separated until he heals. They can still be in proximity, but often buns will start fighting after one has been desexed even if they were previously bonded. Not always, but you want to be safe as you don’t want him to get hurt.

Check with your vet for recovery times. It’s usually a couple weeks. After that, as long as they’re still getting along they can go right back together. Possibly even sooner depending on his recovery. You will probably also want to keep him in a slightly smaller space for a few days just so he doesn’t over exert himself. (Again, double check times with your vet. I’ve been looking into this for my girl and it’s a more invasive surgery so it’s likely shorter for males.)

All that said, every bun is different. If it seems like they’re stressed being apart, then by all means put them back together.
