Right now, my bunny Attila is living in a basic “starter” bunny cage. I know it’s really bad, but it’s only until his new (bigger with separate floors!) is complete. I noticed that he has little reddish bumps on the backs of his heels. I can’t tell if they’re calluses or sores, but will be monitoring them. Anyhow, I wanted to know what I can line his cage with to help avoid sores. I currently have fleece, but he just pushes it around and sits on the hard floor. He likes to chew on everything so I need something that is relatively safe for him to be left alone with. I have rugs on my floor that he runs around on, but he stays in the cage when I’m sleeping or out of the house.

Could it be sore hocks? I don’t know much about them, but I’m sure someone knowledgeable could advise you how to treat them. Hope your little guy gets better soon!

I highly recommend seagrass or grass mats. Oxbow’s Timothy grass mats are pretty thick. Perfectly safe for chewing!

My sister’s bunny has the same thing, but the floors of her big cage have fleece tacked on. I think it may be calluses.

Thank you for the advice! I might order a bunch of seagrass rope and weave something. I wonder if that’s more expensive. . .

Hmm, I’m not sure! I got mine from a pet store, but it was pretty inexpensive. It is pretty thin, though, so perhaps you’ll be able to make a thicker one with rope.
