We have a 3 year old unaltered female rabbit named Bella. She’s a sweet girl and we adore her. She has a huge cage and is quite the princess. We are aware of a male rabbit in a need of a new home (the owner is allergic to hay). He is a very sweet little guy but also unaltered. We can put another cage together in another part of the home and keep them separate. We may end up getting one or both of them spayed/neutered if we can find a vet to do so.

My questions is: Will having an opposite sex rabbit in the house cause them to be hormonal or act weird? I have no plans – NONE- to allow them near each other, but will being within the same house create issues (like can they smell each other, like dogs/cats would)? I’m concerned about spraying. Bella doesn’t spray and is nicely litter trained. When she has free time to roam and play she doesn’t have accidents. I would hate to have her start spraying/marking if there is another rabbit around.

If down the road, they were spayed and/or neutered, I wonder if they could ever be introduced and bond with one another. The male is only a few months old now and very friendly and sweet, will maturity change his personality? Is he likely to spray or be difficult to litter train (being a male vs. female, I know that no one can predict the train-ability of a rabbit in general).

        Any other advice is appreciated.

In short, yes… Having another unaltered bunny in the same home can change their behaviors. It might not, but it could. There’s really no way for us to know for sure.

The boy is still very young and likely hasn’t reached sexual maturity yet. He may start spraying/humping as he matures. Your girl may also start displaying sexual behaviors bc of the presence of an unaltered male. Even if they are not in the same area of the house, you moving back and forth with their scents on you can trigger this.

If both are fixed, it is possible to bond them. It might take some time, but most bunnies will come to accept each other. This isn’t 100%, but it’s likely.

It’s very, very important that, regardless of what you decide, that you follow through on spaying your girl. Females have an incredibly high rate of reproductive cancer if not fixed.
