My Rabbit is suffering from a chronic Pasturella Infection and has been on Baytril & Tribessen. Both had no effect and so we saw a rabbit specialist who prescribed 0.2ml of PenStrep to be administered by injection. Here is the link to the PenStrep we have http://www.norbrook.com/products/pe…injection/. I noticed on MediRabbit though that Streptomycin wasn’t safe for use in Rabbits, is this the same ‘Strep’ that’s in PenStrep and also will it harm my rabbit?

Furthermore penicillin is renowned for causing problems in a rabbits stomach so should I give my rabbits a probiotic. I was thinking one of the probiotics from Protexin but wondered if anyone else knows of another probiotic I could use.

From what I find, dihydrostreptomycin is sometimes used on meat-rabbits. Meat production is not a subject we discuss here on BB (of course), but the use indicate that the rabbits will survive the treatment, or it would be economically unsound to perform it. If baytril iand tribrissen isn’t helping, the vet has to try sth heavier that hopefully does clear the infection. But I must stress that I personally don’t know about the use of dihydrostreptomycin in rabbits, so please ask your vet to explain. If it’s a specialist vet, he/she probably has experience with this treatment, but you should always ask if you are worried.

Probiotics are imo very good for rabbits. Protexin Fibreplex is recommended by my vet.
