My 7 month old flemish giant, Luna, got spayed this afternoon. Her surgery started at 1:30 and I got a call from my vet around 4:30 telling me that she was waking up nicely. She has yet to eat anything (with the exception of about half a syringe of critical care). She hates the stuff and was pulling her head back and pulling away every time the syringe touched her mouth. She also refuses to eat her usual food (hay, pellets, leafy greens, and a little bit of fruit). I’m really worried that she’s not eating. The vet advised me to feed her critical care 2-3 times before I go to bed tonight, but I’m really worried that she’s going to tear her incisions open with the way that she fights me. She’s also very lethargic and not her usual perky self. I know that it’s only been 5 hours post surgery but I’m getting very worried.

When we have an operation we feel awful until next day, or a few days after, maybe she wants some quiet alone time, I would call the vets tomorrow if she isn’t eating, after my operation I didn’t want food or anything to drink, couldn’t even look at the old lady eating chocolates, she offered me some but I politely refused, but next day at dinner time I was offered fish pie and peas my favourite, they gave me 3 pies, then sponge pudding and custard, then 2 ladies were going home, so I had 2 more sponge and custards, maybe its the same for Luna, she’s been through a lot and different smells and a bit tired, handled by different people, but if she isn’t eating properly and you are worried, call the vet.

It’s not uncommon for rabbits not to want to eat after surgery, but they have to, hence the need for syringe-feeding. Rabbits are known to spit quite vigorously , but they often come around when some food has landed in their stomach, probably because food makes them feel better. If she spits out 50% or even more of what you give her at least she’s gotten something in her. Most of us bunny-owners have been covered in Critical Care after a bout of syringe-feeding, I think. I do think 5 hours is a bit soon to tell though and her being sluggish 5 hours after a big surgery is not abnormal.

If you are having big troubles I think you should call the vet, they might want her to come in and get some sub q fluids, maybe stay for observation.
