Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid the bottom of the plastic litter box getting covered in gunk (from the litter pellets and pee mixing together).  Most of it can be wiped off, but the bottom of the litter box gets stained with the stuff and its hard to scrape it off.  We had to buy the buns two new litter boxes, which I have put wax paper on the very bottom, covered by paper towel, and then that is covered by the littler pellets.  Is it okay to have the wax paper on the very bottom?  Or is this dangerous for the bunnies?

Try soaking it in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar/water. I keep a spray bottle of this mix handy to clean litterboxes and it works great.

(Note on spray bottles — when using vinegar in a spray bottle, you have to use one that is designed for use with chemicals because vinegar is acidic and a regular spray bottle will just stop spraying)

            Hi,

I recently had this issue and I solved it by just soaking it in white vinegar for 10 mins or so.  I also use a 50/50 water-vinegar solution in a spray bottle for regular cleaning but the vinegar soaking alone got the stubborn stains off.  My litterbox is lined with newspaper at the base, wood pellets in the middle and a decent amount of hay on top.  I just rotate the litterbox corners and add small quantities of hay daily so my rabbit stays clean (my guy will usually prioritise the litterbox hay, no matter how fresh the hay in his large haybox is).  I would probably substitute the wax paper for rabbit-safe newspaper (non-toxic ink).  This way, if they eat it on the off-chance, you won’t be worried about it being potentially indigestible.  My little guy ignores newspaper and prefers to dig and explore, so I tend not to have that problem.  It’s the carpet I have to keep an eye on!
