Hello I am a new co-parent, with my daughter, to a 2 month old Flemish giant named Oscar. We only just got him Friday evening but am concerned that he is not eating his pellets. Oscar gobbles up his alfalfa hay and they occasional romaine, grass or clovers we give him but wants nothing to do with the pellets. We bought Purina Advanced Professional 18% as that was what my research told me to get for babies.

Is there a way I can get him to eat? Is he OK without eating pellets? Would really appreciate the help.

Congratulations to your new family member!

If he gobbles his alfalfa hay, I’m guessing he gets his extra protein from that, so he may not absolutely need his pellets. With rabbits this young it is adviced to do pellets ad lib (unlimited and always available) though, so you can feed him pellets and let him eat them at his own pace f ex in the night when he doesn’t have anything else (except grassy hay, they should always have hay). Or you could feed less alfalfa to entice him to take more pellets. Alfalfa has a high nutritional value.

If he’s ok nutrition-wise or not is best judged by his weight. If he puts on weight as he should, he is getting enough food. When he’s this young you may be able to weigh him in a bowl on a kitchen scales, but he will of course soon grow out of most generally available bowls (and kitchen scales).

It also might be due to the fact that I switched brands. The breeder was feeding him Oxbow Young Adult. I am picking up a bag tonight to see if that may be what the issue is. I have also noticed he has diarrhea. I did read it could be due to eating carrots so we have stopped giving carrots and are focusing more on romaine, grass, and clover as added goodies to his hay.

What I did with my bunny when she didn’t eat her pellets was make them interesting for her. Shred up some apple very finely and mix it in with her food, so it will tast good to her, then slowly add less and less apple and she will realize that the taste of the pellets isn’t really that bad!
