Does anyone use essential oils for the litter box to cut cut down on odor? Even if if I clean it, it still smells.

No, I don’t use them in my rabbits litter tray, it might smell good to us but over powering to bunny.

Maybe you should consider a different litter.

Please consider Sirita’s suggestion! Essential oils should be used with extreme caution, especially near animals! They can kill birds and poison cats, and do severe damage to humans as well if used improperly. Sorry to sound melodramatic but these are simple statements of fact. While I have not (far as I remember) read studies specific to rabbits essential oils are absorbed by inhalation which could cause problems. Also if walked in a rabbit will end by ingesting the oils (because of their grooming) introducing the oils to their blood stream. These are in reality chemical compounds. Natural does NOT mean safe. Please exercise caution and when in doubt put the rabbit’s health, safety and well being first and foremost!

                Ditto Grey Dove.

What are you using for litter?

I use Yesterday’s News with hay on top and change it every second day. My buns do not smell at all. Cleaning the box regularly with  hot water and vinegar also helps.

Don’t worry, I haven’t used essential oils yet I was just brainstorming different ideas. I use Carefresh litter and usually change it every day or every other day. I could try a different litter I suppose. I also already clean it out with vinegar water, not every time I change it though.

Olly has wood pellets, it does not smell, but I clean his tray every day.

I’m sorry to ask in someone else’s post but, is that white vinegar LittlePuffyTail?

Yes, Pinky. Just plain old white vinegar. It’s great for getting rid of urine smell and it’s cheap and safe.

Yeah, I would soak the litter box with water and vinegar every so often. That will help deodorize the plastic itself. Carefresh does not absorb odors very well, so I would suggest trying a different litter. Pelleted varies seem to do a good job at absorbing odors. There is pine, paper, and aspen (although I think the aspen smell is a bit strong).

I second yesterdays news. I line the litter box with newspaper then put a thin layer of yesterdays news over that. I don’t put hay on top just for sanitary purposes and finances. But I do have a hay rack beside the box so my rabbit can eat and use the restroom.

I second (third? fourth?) using a pellet litter. I used to use CareFresh, but it always smelled. I’ve switched to a pine pellet litter and I clean it every 2-3 days. I also fill it with water and vinegar every Saturday and let it soak for an hour or so (I have spare litter boxes they use while I’m cleaning the big ones). Keeps the smell down to almost nothing.
