There was nothing unusual tonight, I turned off the main PC and said “Good night Olly, see you in the morning.” I got into bed watching videos with subtitles on as not to disturb Olly, then I heard him thumping, ‘Thump, thump, thump thump.’ I got up to make sure he was OK, he looked like he had just woken up and I talked to him, through the bars, I looked round to see if there was anything in my garden like a fox, nothing, can rabbits bang their back leg in their sleep?

We are expecting a storm sometime soon and Olly doesn’t like bad weather, I have a big blanket ready to cover his cage and smaller blankets to cover Olly up if he’s not in his cage and wants Mummy Pinky.

Rabbits don’t thump in their sleep. They may make some leg twitches or he could have had a bad dream. I’ve seen some rabbits wake up in a panic.

Normally they only thump when they are either afraid or mad. It could be that he is sensing the storm coming and that is what has him upset. Or it could have been something very brief that jut got him nervous that came and went quickly. Or maybe he just wanted to get your attention.

My Maryann will thump sometimes before an earthquake comes. So when she starts thumping for no apparent reason, I make sure nothing is near an edge.

Yes, the rain is coming down now and he is clanking things in his cage, I’m in the UK and we do have every few years very tiny earthquakes, not like you have in America, we do feel them and they can wake us up, just give us a bit of a shock, last time there was one I was at a friends house and it was getting late and I said I wanted to go home to bed, I heard something and asked what it was, my friend didn’t know either and looked confused, I picked up my bag and then the whole place started to shake, pictures moving, the light on the ceilng, mugs and plates were shaking on the side and I was scared and started crying and said. “Poltergeist.”
Storms here are just a lot of wind and rain, but if it gets too scary for him I’ll put the radio on and there is a duvet we can hide under.

My buns sometimes thump, then run and hide for “no reason”. Their senses are way better than ours, so it’s often difficult to say what it is they’ve heard/smelled/sensed.
They can also thump from physical discomfort, like gas. When Yohio had dental issues, he would thump and run and hide in panic, so I now see thumping as a bit of a warning sign. May be nothing, but I check for signs of tummy trouble anyway.

We have also had a few tiny earthcakes these last 10 ys or so. One time the chairs in the City Hall of our neighbour town fell over. In Sweden, that’s extremely rare, almost unheard of.

I’ve never seen my bunny thump while she was sleeping, but I did see my bunny Peanut legs twitching from time to time. Creepy, but the vet said it was normal.

Your bunny must be hearing something and thumping could be a warning or Olly unconsciously knows that the bad weather is near and instincts are kicking in.

One of my boys does not like to pee in the house, so sometimes he used to thump late in the evening or during the early hours, meaning, its time too take me out in the garden. He’d thump 3-4 times, then wait to see if I’m coming. If not, he’d thump again. He has eventually got the message: go indoors, or hold on til daylight…
