We had our foster rabbit Toby out to play tonight and after petting his head for a few minutes and gently petting his ears he started to shake his head quite vigorously. He will usually shake his head after pettings are over, but he kept going and his left ear was flopped onto his back. He started scratching at his ear, shaking his head, and scratching some more. This went on for about five to ten minutes. We put him back in his pen and after some more shaking/scratching both ears perked up. The inside of his left ear isn’t red and doesn’t show any signs of mites and also he doesn’t have a head tilt.

Toby has been shedding nonstop for the last two weeks, also. Is it possible that he just had some loose fur fall into his ear while he was being petted or are there any signs we should look out for of a problem?

        Thank you!

Wooly seemed perfectly fine. Then he started holding his ear funny, scratching his ear, and shaking his head. Out popped a piece of yucky looking earwax. I looked in his ear and found nothing so I thought it was over. About 2 weeks later, he was doing it again. This time it was more obvious. I took him to the vet and the vet confirmed there was an infection brewing, so he was given antibiotics. My point is, he never had noticeable head tilt and he seemed fine after the initial fit. You would be surprised at how bad something can get before they start exhibiting worrying signs.

Toby’s ear could be itchy for a number of reasons and I suppose fur falling down in there is a possibility. If you’re worried, I would have a vet check it out. I always feel it is better to be safe than sorry.
