My bunny just bit my house helper. Why? She never bit me before so why did she bit my house helper?

She growled/grunt first then bit my house helper, and the funny thing was my house helper also growled/grunted back at my bunny. She didn’t hurt the bunny just growled/grunted back. What is wrong with my bunny?

Hormones. The house helper startled her – could be a number of things.

Your house helper displayed signs of aggression back at your rabbit. She should have left her alone when the rabbit warned her.

Scubahood- The cleaning ladies opened the cage with out your permission? I would be really upset, especially if the person is not familiar with rabbits. I would be afraid they would try to pick him up wrong.

100% agree. Your bunny was quite nice giving her a warning in the first place, some rabbits don’t even do that much. She should have taken the hint and left instead of antagonizing your bun further. You might want to tell her to stay away from the rabbit from now on, or teach her how to properly interact with it.

Is she spayed? If not, the reason could be hormones like Sarita said. It could have been territorial, as it sounds like your house helper opened the cage and reached inside.

It could be hormones since my bunny just turned 3 months old. My house helper said she was minding her own business then my bunny just growled at her. She ignored the bunny, but peanut my very angry bunny bit her.My bunny is not yet spayed since she is too young. The vet said she should be 5 to 6 months before he can spay her. Already warned my house helpers to avoid my bunny if she growls/grunts at them. Lols still very funny to hear a rabbit to do this since they look so tiny.

Thanks for the ideas. Is there a way for me to make my bunny not be aggressive?

If she doesn’t take a warning, what does she expect? As for less aggressive, nothing until vet operation and they need a little time to calm down after that too, I wouldn’t go up to any animal I didn’t know, it is not Peanuts fault she bit your house keeper.

Growling / grunting back at the rabbit is not ignoring it. Also … was the bunny free roam? I don’t see any other way the rabbit could have just hopped up and bit her. Maybe when you are expecting the house helper the rabbit should be put away? Not in a teeny cage but in a decent sized space of her own that the house helper does not need to be in?

Surgery is the only thing that may help her aggression permanently, but to me it doesn’t seem like random aggression, there is usually a cause even if we don’t see it or it may be small to us.

The best option is to keep the rabbit away from the house helper. In a cage or in a room where the house helper doesn’t go.

As for why a rabbit suddenly bites, it’s very difficult to tell. She may have felt threatened, which doesn’t mean your house helper actually did something to threaten her. That your rabbit doesn’t bite you is probably because she knows you, so she is not scared of you.

The best thing for a girl rabbit is to be spayed, the risk of cancer is about 80% in unspayed does. She needs to be about 6 months old before she can be spayed safely.
