My bun is a very picky hay eater… I had tried 5 different hays and suppliers before I found that he would eat the Small Pet Select orchard hay. I ordered two 10 pound boxes last Fall/Winter. I thought I had it figured out.

But recently it came time for more hay, and I put in an order for the usual orchard hay end of March. When it came, I could see right away that it was much more stalky hay and not the soft, grassy orchard that we had before. Although the box was labeled Orchard. As this is my first “spring” hay, I figured this might be just a seasonal change?

But Boris does not like it. Barely eats it. And I have a lot left. So I emailed Small Pet Select end of April to see what they might say — if it’s normal for the hay to be different, if they had heard this about the recent Orchard from other customers, or what they might suggest.

        No reply.

I followed up 2 weeks later and still no response. I am extremely put off by this lack of service, ESPECIALLY considering the at least ONE PER DAY marketing email they manage to send out and clutter up our inboxes. Not. Impressed.

Any other experiences like this with Small Pet Select?

And more importantly, any suggestion for other hays? I’ve tried KMS, Binky Bunny, Oxbow, America’s Pet Diner… I don’t think I’ve tried One Ear Up or Sierra Valley, so those are next on my list. But man, hay sampling is expensive.

I’m really surprised that they haven’t responded. I’ve had it take a couple of days before, but they’ve always gotten back to me. Are you using their online messaging to contact them or are you sending an email directly through your email?

I’ve done both, JackRabbit. Responded to the original order confirmation email, as well as messaged them through their site.

Boris doesn’t eat Oxbow orchard hay? That’s quite funny have you tried KMS bluegrass hay or timothy hay?

I know, seems people swear by Oxbow hay but he just isn’t interested! If there’s one thing I’ve learned about rabbits (1st time owner), it’s that they’re opinionated!!

Yes have tried KMS bluegrass…. He liked it better than Timothy but wasn’t scarfing it down by any means. He liked the soft grassy orchard better. He doesn’t seem to like Timothy of any kind.

I think many times the problem with hay could be growing conditions – sometimes it’s just not the same from year to year or season to season.
