Tenzin has been home a couple days now and I have noticed that he doesn’t seem to eat much hay. Only about a handful a day, As thats what i am replacing each day.

Tenzin is a 4 lb Holland lop.

He drinks roughly 6-8 ounces each day, 2/3 cups pellets ( he is 4 months so he is getting unlimited baby rabbit oxbow pellets) , And I give him one slice of apple and 1/3 cups of veggies, Veggies are new to him so I have been watching for any change in poops etc. He is doing very well and runs to me for his apple and veggies. Which I handfeed him to work on bonding.

I know he should be eating his body size in hay but he isn’t eating nearly that.

However his poops look great, and he seems healthy.

I will try another brand of hay when I run out. But is there anything else I can do? Or don’t worry as long as he is healthy and eating well?

It’s probably just him preferring the pellets to the hay, which is normal if you’re using alfalfa pellets and grass hay. It’ll just sort itself out when you switch over to timothy pellets and limit the amount of pellets he gets.

If you want him to eat more hay, just limit the amount of pellets. Eating more hay is a good habbit to form for later on. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it, unless you have small hands

Well I do have small hands but it’s more of as much as I can grab more so than will actually fit in my hand.

Try different types of hay (timothy, orchard, oat, meadow, brome) until you find out what he prefers. Different brsnds of hay are also something to look into — online distributors (ex. KMS, Small Pet Select, APD, etc. — watch for shipping costs depending on shipping distance) tend to have fresher hay than store bought bag hay, and you can also look into local sources of baled hay (look for horse quality hay). Some bunnies also can be enticed with hay toppers (ex. such as those sold on the BB store).

I agree with JackRabbit. Try another type of grass hay. Mine love Orchard and Oat. I use Oxbow brand.

I found a person to ship me mini bales and I did mention I will be trying other types of hay. But it seems he just doesnot eat much hay, he didn’t for the breeder ( who used horse hay) for my friend and now for me. So it could be a battle to find hay or he could be a bun that just doesn’t eat a ton of hay and we are gonna have to get creative

I have one bunny who doesn’t eat much hay unless it’s short pieces put in a bowl and then she’ll eat every crumb! She’s only three lbs and the bowl is a full size oval casserole dish!

I will figure out a trick for tenzin. He LOVES bowls. If he sees one he runs up and checks it out. So I may try feeding some hay in a bowl tomorrow

Kieko and her “special hay”. Yes, sometimes it is just a matter of tricking them. Experiment and see what works. Sometimes the silliest things will make them think the hay is worth eating.

I tried the bowl last night and I can’t tell if he ate any. If he did it certainly wasn’t more than the little he usually eats.

I have to go to the pet store soon. So maybe I will try another type of hay.

I would start another thread but can’t from my tablet and I don’t know where I put my computer .

Tenzin has had a couple sneezes each day, just one at a time and he is showing no other symptoms .
