        Hi all,

We have a dwarf lop bunny and I’ve noticed from time to that he gets these small clumps of hair sticking out around his face/neck area.  They can be easily removed and come out in a clump as you can see from the attached picture.  As you can see the base of the clump of hairs is stuck together by some kind of dried skin

Whilst stroking his face I have noticed that if you feel underneath his hair he has a few of these on his cheeks, some which aren’t ready to come out yet but others which are removed with a slight pull.

He doesn’t seem to be bothered by this and is very happy for us to inspect/touch them.  His general health seems very good and he is happy.  He only seems to have a few of them.

Has anyone else’s bunny had these?  Are they normal?  Should I take him to a vet?  I should state he is currently in the middle of a moult.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

        Thank you

I don’t see a picture either, but I believe I know exactly what you are describing. A couple of my rabbits had these as well – used to drive me crazy because I couldn’t ever figure out the mystery of why they happened or get anyone who could explain what exactly they were. I had 2 rex rabbits who would get them regularly (I thought maybe it had something to do with their mutated fur type or that fact that both of them had whiskers when they were babies and then lost their whiskers when they got older) – it was a process of ours that every couple of weeks, I’d give these rabbits a deep rubbing massage all around their face and eyes and I could feel those small hard tufts and would gently rub them at the base and the ones that were ready to fall off would and the ones that weren’t , we’d wait until the next grooming session. I felt like the rabbit really appreciated me taking care of them and enjoyed the face grooming. I have had others say that their rabbits get them as well – no one has ever reported that it turned into any real problem…. my rabbits had these all their lives and they lived to ten and beyond – so my opinion is that it is not something to worry about. BUT, it did drive me CRAZY that I still don’t know why they get them. Of course, you have to ensure the crusting is not mite related… but if what you are describing is what my rabbits had (and it sounds like it is) it is just a bit of a mystery, but nothing to worry about.

Apologies the picture didn’t seem to attach.  See below.

              And the Bun himself!

I found this old forum post, this person has the same hair tuft or “plug” I am familiar with… is this similar to what you are talking about?

                  Hi Toni,

Yes they are exactly what I am talking about.  Thank you!  It’s a reassuring to read through the thread you suggested and see that it’s common with lops and doesn’t seem to be anything sinister.

                  Thank you again!

Ah yes, that was one of my old posts!
My dwarf lop gets these on his cheeks. He always seems to enjoy when I scratch around at the dry bits.

Both my bunnies get these. I pick them out of Yohio’s facial fur, he seems to enjoy the grooming. Bam doesn’t enjoy having his removed so with him I wait until they come lose and then pull them out. Yohio is not a lop but he may very well have lop ancestors, he’s of unknown lineage (found him as a stray).

It appears very normal to me but the first time I found one I think I took a picture of it because it puzzled me.

Yes, those are normal. My Mini-Rex used to get them all the time around his mouth. I call them “tuffies” and they drove me crazy. I always tried to pull them out and it really ticked him off.
