I am planning to get Tenzin Neutered and I also have a rabbit buddy planned ( I will know next week if my boyfriend is ok with getting a second)

My vet is very adamant he WILL NOT alter animals under 2 lbs. Tenzin is 4 months and should be about 4 lbs I plan to weigh him. But the second bun , his parents are in the 3 lb range. How long does it typically take  rabbits in this size range to reach adult weights?

Smaller breeds tend to stop growing around 6 months, but they may continue to fill out (gain weight) for awhile after that. Is there a reason why your vet is afraid to neuter bunnies under a given size?

He won’t alter at all under that size and prefers for females to be bigger. I didn’t talk to him personally he is the vet of the woman I work for but she said he went into great depth about it.

Also I wouldn’t say afraid is the right word.

Marlee will be 2 in August and is full grown at 3 lbs. Kieko will be 2 around late June/early July and is also 3 lbs ful grown. Both were spayed early at just under 4 months old, and both were close to 2.5 lbs when spayed. Moshi is a little over 4 lbs now (samevage as Marlee), and he was around 3 lbs when he was neutered (same day Marlee was spayed).

The vet that did Marlee and Moshi had a 2 lb min and also preferred that females be bigger but his reasoning was that everything is smaller in a little bunny and harder to maneuver as opposed to a bunny medical reason.

I think that’s his reasoning too. Honestly if I wanted a bun under 2 lbs spayed I have a vet who spayed my rat. Unfortunately she didn’t make it but it was our choice not to wake her after a 3 cm tumor was found attached to her bladder. It could not be removed .

Thank you for that growth timeline. It’s exactly what I needed. Since he will be 3 lbs fully grown at 4 months ( which is when he will be physically ready for surgery) he should be at or above the minimum weight.

It sounds like just a preference then, meaning he might do it if he had to (there are bunnies out there that are 1.5 lbs fully grown). If the bunny you’re planning to get is supposed to be around 3 lbs when fully grown, I think that leaves you quite a bit of wiggle room as far as age goes. What I mean is, the bunny will likely be over 2 lbs at 4 months or so.

Even fully grown buns … if they are not 2 lbs he will not alter them.

I did buy a scale to keep track. But I just wanted to know the likelihood of him being the proper size

I find out next Wednesday if I can get a second.
