Hi, I’m from Philippines and it’s my very first time to get a pet bunny. It’s been about a month now since I got him. I’ve checked his fur and there are few brown specks all over him, I’m not entirely sure if those are mites or simply dusts and dirt. Also, I’ve seen some flaky stuffs on his skin when I checked the back of his head. I’ve seen him scratch his head and ears before, and he occasionally does this so I don’t think there’s something wrong with it. As much as it also worries me it might turn out worse, I wouldn’t want to self-medicate my bunny with selamectin or ivermectin. Anyway, my question is are there any home remedies for fur mites / dandruff? In my city there are no vet clinics that specializes on rabbits.

I’d really appreciate if anyone could recommend me what to do.

Fur mites are best treated with selamectin, also sold as Revolution. There is a kind for kittens that’s suitable for rabbits.

I don’t know of any good home remedies, sometimes you hear mineral oil. I tried that on my bunny Bam when he was new with me, but it didn’t take care of the problem.

It could be fleas or mites. Fleas leave little dirt specks (it’s actually flea poops). Revolution is the best bunny safe treatment. There are several types of flea treatments that can be deadly to rabbits so be careful what you use. I think you might be able to get Revolution online.

Thank you so much! I’ll try to find it, and ask the petstore if they have any.

Also, I’ve found out about ‘food grade diatomaceous earth’… is it safe?

You can use that for killing fleas in carpeting and whatnot, just make sure your bunny isn’t in a position where he can inhale it. That can cause respiratory problems.
