I got my bunny off craigslist about two weeks ago. He is 10 months old. The lady I got him from told me he was neutered and perfectly healthy. When I went to pick him up he was infested with fleas and had tons of matts (he’s an English Angora) I got revolution for the fleas and that’s seemed to do the trick and have finally got him untangled. I had a feeling the lady hadn’t told me the truth regarding him being neutered since he honks and circles me periodically. Sure enough I took him to the vet and he in not neutered.

I originally wanted to get another bunny to bond with him as I’ve read bunnies are much happier with a playmate. But now I’m not sure. He is so friendly and follows me, he doesn’t spray, he is litter box trained, he runs to the door when I get home, he loves to sit with me and snuggle. I’ve had bunnies in the past but none as friendly as this little guy. I don’t want to loose his attachment to me. I think he’s perfect. But, if he will still follow me and snuggle, and be so delighted see me, perhaps I would get him neutered and get him a bunny buddy.

Has anyone had experience with this?

The only thing I would say is how sure are you about his age? If the woman lied about everything else I mean? Bramble was such a well behaved bunny until he was around five or six months old, then he started showing signs of frustration and we decided to neuter him. I’m just saying that because if he is younger than you think then he might not be fully matured yet so his behaviours might change.

If you do want to get another bunny, you absolutely have to neuter/spay them both before bonding them.

Neutering doesn’t change a buns personality, but it does change some of their behaviours. Usually the ones you don’t want (humping, spraying etc) go away and the bun calms down a bit, but their personality remains largely the same. However, age can change their personality especially when it comes to being snuggly, most buns seem to like it when they are young but grow out of it I am afraid.

I would say (unless you decide to get another bun of course) that you don’t need to neuter unless his behaviour becomes unacceptable and/or you think he is suffering because he is frustrated which was the case for Bramble, he never sprayed or anything but he was obviously frustrated and it wasn’t good for him or us.
