I had a bonded pair of Netherland Dwarf buns, and we lost our girl last week to an ongoing health issue. I’m trying to find our little guy a new friend, but I need some advice. The closest rabbit rescue to where we live is about 2 hours from us and will not let us adopt from so far away. I’ve been looking on Craigslist, but I’m not sure if that is a wise approach.

I have found a potential bunny, but she is almost 3 times the size of mine, and I don’t know if that will be a problem.

I don’t want to wait too long to start trying to bond him to a new bun, but my options for finding him a companion are pretty limited, especially if I don’t want to buy one from a rabbitry (there are plenty of those around here.)

        Any suggestions?

Size shouldn’t be an issue for bonding. Small rabbits bond with larger rabbits all the time. The only potential problem with having such a large rabbit is if your current set up can accommodate his size.

I adopted friends for my girl off kijiji and it’s worked out well for bonding. The first week was hard, especially because the new bunnies had a bout of GI stasis. I was lucky and they mostly got along from quite early on. I never had any out and out fights. A few nips and some tantrums, but no injuries.

Find out if you can bring your bunny to meet any of the ones you find on Craigslist. That way you can see how they interact.

Yes, size shouldn’t be a problem.

Wherever you choose to get your new bun from, make sure you bring your current bun to meet him/her to see how they get along before you make a commitment.
Rescues are the best places really, as buns will be health checked and neutered, plus they may offer bonding help.
