Just moved to new apartment. My rabbits took over “biggest” room aka master bedroom without bathroom.

I usually grew my plants with plant light near kitchen. But right now, there’s no space for it.

I am considering to move it to pet room. Ofc, all the plants will be on the table that rabbits cannot reach. I’m about to grow shallots, chives, and stuff like that but I am not sure if it is okay because the scents will bother rabbits?

        Thanks

I don’t think the scent would bother them but just make sure there is absolutely zero chance of the buns getting a nibble of anything toxic. I don’t put any plants in areas where my buns’ go because leaves can fall off.

As long as they can’t reach the plants and no leaves can fall on the floor, it will probably be okay. But yes, make sure there is no way they could get a nibble (even dead leaves that have fallen off).

Shallots and chives won’t kill a rabbit if the rabbit got hold of a dead leaf. That said, onion-type plants are unhealthy for rabbits and most other pets.

Really toxic plants I wouldn’t hazard in the same room as bunnies, but shallots and chives are not crazy toxic + leaves don’t readily fall off them.

Bunnies will readily eat chives etc if given the opportunity, the wild bunnies in my allotment garden love chives and I have to put netting around the plants. The pic is of garlic that I accidentally didn’t harvest last summer, you can see where the wild rabbits have nibbled on the leaves. So keep the plants out of reach, just like you are planning to =)

I think an accidental nibble or dead leaves would be the worry, not the scent. I’d be super worried about real toxic plants; like Bam said chives and stuff aren’t healthy or ok to feed, but I don’t think they are toxic.

Bunnies will find a way. They are bunnies. I would personally locate it elsewhere or put an isolation cage over it.

                    Thanks everyone,

The plants that I’m planning to grow don’t really have leaves that can fall off. I used to grow shallots all the time and I never experience getting any leaves from shallots.

The rest of plants I’ll grow are basil, mint, parsley, cilantro, and other herbs that rabbits can eat.

So since the scents won’t bother them then it should be all good.

Yes rabbits will find the way. Fortunately, my rabbits stopped trying to find the way. I guess that’s the sign of senior ages

If that’s all you’re growing, then I wouldn’t worry too much. But no, I don’t think the scents will bother them.
