I was talking to Olly through his bars telling him what I was going to buy him next payday, saying I’ll get him some different fruits and veg to try, more hay and I was going to talk to the man in the pet shop about what the best sawdust was, now I know Olly had a bad experience at the vets, maybe he wasn’t happy he had his operation or when he had his injections, well I said to him I would ask the man in the shop about the best carry box for going to the vets, but when he heard the word ‘Vets’ he sort of played dead, when my friend came he said “Are you taking him for a check up at the vets?” Again the same thing happened, I know he knows certain words like ‘Bowl’ if I say bowl he will push his bowl to the front of his cage, ‘Food’ is another one, like if I say “I’ll get you some food.” He will get excited and push his bowl towards the front of the cage, if I say “I’ll get you some more hay.” he will look at his hay rack and if I say “Treat for Olly.” he will get on his back paws and stretch up and move his front paws, he doesn’t do this all the time but most. the other thing is I have had difficulty feeding him the last few days, but that is just me because I had a problem with Arthritic pain bending to get to his cage he has knocked the bowl out of my hand a few times, but now he does not do that, he comes to the front of the cage when it is open and when he sees me struggle or I’m taking to long he will put the back of his paws up underneath the bowl until it is an inch off the base of his cage, then look at his food and I’ll say “Go on.” then he will take it, I do know animals sense when someone needs a little help maybe it is that, also if I give him some fruit or veg through the front and again I’m struggling he will get on his back paws and stretch up and rattle the bars on the top for me to feed him through the top, but is this all normal for a rabbit who is 2 years old who hardly knows me? Is he getting used to me? The playing dead is a strange thing, but he did do it when I tried to clean him out the first time because he was not used to me.

My bunnies either have no sense of “mommy needs some help” or they dimply don’t care. No matter how stiff I am or how slow I’m moving, if I have food in my hands I’ve got bunnies running circles and figure 8’s around my feet and trying to climb up my legs. Its a wonder I haven’t stepped on them or broken my neck trying not to. Moshi even goes airborne like a flying squirrel as soon as the bowl is less than 2 feet from the floor.

LOL JR, yeah, mine are the same. Leopold will reach up with his paws as I’m lowering their bowl into place. He will hook the rim and actually yank down. So impatient.

Pinky it sounds like you have a very unique connection with your bun. That sounds incredible. Lucky you! Have you ever had other close connections with animals in the past?

Yeah, I’m kind of jealous. LOL
The closest thing I think I’ve had to that kind of relationship is being the only person who can handle a particular animal.

That’s interesting Pinky. While I like to think I’m connected to my pets it certainly isn’t on that level. That’s a gift!

When I worked at the animal shelter all the small animals acted in ways like this, this was 20 years ago, I used to sit in the big room with them, bend down to their level, talk to them, crawl about and pretend to be asleep, but when I didn’t go into work because I was rushed to hospital with an appendicitis, the owner of the place called the hospital after my operation and asked to speak to me, she told me the rabbits and guinea pigs were making such a noise and she sent other workers into the room but they still made a noise, she even told me the resident pigs had been in a mood, they used to wait at the gates for me in the mornings, the next day when the doctor saw me he told me I needed to stay in just another day and told me the owner of the centre had called again, after spending another night and crying over not being there I got up at 7:00am and showered and had breakfast and put my uniform on and the doctor asked why I had my uniform on, I said the animals needed me, he checked me over and said I could go, he arrange transport for me, but I asked them to take me to the centre, the Pigs were at the gate and walked down to the small animals with me, I went in the room and it went very quiet, I just sat in the corner and looked at them, then they all ran towards me, I couldn’t believe it myself, 8 rabbits 4 guinea pigs so sweet.

Wow!! That’s amazing! Always drove me nuts that as much as I love animals, I never felt I had any special connection with them. I’ve grown to accept it, but I always wanted to be one of those who could really communicate like that. What a wonderful story! And, again, what a wonderful gift.
