I’ve noticed in the last couple of weeks that the bunnies are smelly. I’ve never noticed a smell other than hay before. It was especially prominent when we picked them up to clip toe nails last night…

Could it be their diet? Maybe a veggie not agreeing with them?

Do I need to clean their scent glands? I never did this with Boston so I don’t have any experience there. Actually my vet (who is very rabbit-savvy) said that I really shouldn’t ever need to when I asked him about monthly maintenance.

Thoughts on the smelly? Advice on the cleaning?

        Thanks!!

I fed my rabbit kale for a few days in a row and I noticed her poo smelled a little stronger than normal. I changed her diet and the scent seemed to go away. What have you been feeding your buns lately? And how often do you clean out their litter box?

They do get kale off and on but haven’t had it for a few days. They get parsley, cilantro, greens, romaine, escarole, endive, kale, green leaf etc.-always a rotation of these but with romaine as the staple for the most part. I usually clean their box every 2-3 days–I notice the smell right away in the box even after it’s just been cleaned. I guess it could be the kale because I might notice a smell even if they haven’t had it in a few days!

When we first came to stay at my dad’s house b/c of the busted pipe at home, Porky went batty marking his territory and stuff. That included his scent glands becoming very very active. The smell of musk was as strong as a ferret. It’s happened a few times at home that he gets a wee bit musky to a lesser degree.

Porky always just cleans himself up and the smell is gone in a few days. Though it’s still lingering a bit here at dad’s house, I figure he’ll turn it all the way off when we get to go home in a few more weeks.

It’s spring. Even though they are fixed, a few hormones linger and tis the season. Give it a week and they will probably knock it off and clean themselves up.

I don’t regularly do scent glands but I’ve done them once in a while when I noticed a smell. Scent glands have a very strong, musky, skunkish odour. For cleaning tips, check out the info in the Bunny Info/Monthly Maintenance section.

I should probably check Bindi’s since he is not able to groom himself as well now. Or maybe I will ask my vet to do it next time. That’s a little cheat you can do. My vet doesn’t even charge me. What an angel.
