I know this varies between individuals but I really need an approximate number of lbs. I am getting a 4 lb holland Lop and need to know roughly how much hay he will eat a month.

This will vary widely between different buns. Some buns LOVE hay and others try to avoid it.

At my local hardware and feed store I buy locally grown bales of hay that are generally bought for horses/goats (but any horse qaulity grassy hay is fine. Timothy hay is one of the recommended hays though). Those bales weigh approximately 65 pounds. I use that for feed and a lot usually gets wasted. I’d say I go through the 65 pounds in 4-6 months. One of those bales only costs about $4-7 depending where you are buying from over here, but down south it can be a lot more expensive. My bun is about 8.5 pounds.

Sorry this didn’t really answer your question, but hopefully you got something out of it.

I really can’t store hay currently. part of why I need to know about how much i will need to buy monthly.

How many buns do you have?

I have been guessing … about their body weight each month.

              Just the 1. She’s about 8.5 pounds.

so 10 lbs a month for an 8.5 lb rabbit … so 6.5-8 lbs of rabbit should eat about that ROUGHLY.

well there is one possibility for storing hay… If I could put it on top of their crate, so anything that falls off the bale falls into the cage and wont make a mess.

                  Would that be ok?

                    My only concerns would be
                    1) The cage not being sturdy and the bale falls in crushing your rabbit
                    2) Lots of hay dust and particles would fall into the cage causing nasal irritations/sneezing. But if you kept her area clean ect. you could try it out.

I store my hay in the bottom of a closet… lol!

I could put a layer of fleece over the cage to catch any dust.

And I can always test the strength of the cage before trying it, but I know the kids at work try to climb on the dog crate all the time and its extremely sturdy.

That would be a good idea to put fleece down to to catch any hay dust. IMO that sounds like it would work.

well I will test it out and see, if it works then I can buy bulk hay

That will be great. You often get a better deal if you buy it in bulk. (If I bought tiny bags of hay it would cost me $9 a bag and I’d have to buy probably 2 bags a week. So I prefer buying in bulk. )

bulk tends to be better on most things I just was worried about it being messy. I know when I used Aspen a while back I found it everywhere for months after.

Are you getting a baby or a full grown rabbit? I think either way, you should start out with a small amount and see how much your rabbit eats – we all wish our rabbit would eat alot of hay, but in reality it isn’t that way. I would not buy in bulk anyway, it’s a good idea but not necessarily ideal.

we will see how things work out.

well he is both 3 1/2 months so he is very young but should be nearly full grown.

I plan to start out buying prepackaged amounts and going from there.

Well in that case I will certainly be buying bales.

I originally wanted to feed my rabbit oxbow hay which can be pretty expensive. For petsmart, a 90 oz bag of hay will run you about $20. But Fuji didn’t like the oxbow hay, so I tried the Kaytee brand and she loved it! A 106 oz bag is about $17. I go through a bag about every month to two months.

                                          How big is Fuji?

And thank you, I wanted to feed oxbow as well , I already have the young rabbit pellets for him.

Fuji is a little under 5 pounds. You also have to take into consideration that there will be a lot of hay that will go to waste. If you are planning on potty training, you will want the hay either in the litter pan, or in a rack where the litter pan is. My rabbit will eat about 60-70% of the hay, and the rest all goes to waste in the litter pan lol.

Okay great! I just didn’t know if you counting on your rabbit eating 100% of the hay

Nah I know they will waste some, but a general amount they eat will still give some idea.
