I brought Zeus to the vet today for a sanitary shave, and they noticed the corners of his mouth are crusty. Between that and his eyes getting crusty at times, and the numerous infections he’s had lately, the vet thinks he may have syphilis.

He’s on a bicillin injection once weekly for 2-3 weeks. Hera is getting it as well because it’s contagious. The vet did say he shows no other symptoms so we caught it early. She’s hoping the injections will clear up his crusty mouth, runny eyes, and may even be good if he has any bacteria left from his inner ear infection.

The vet did think the tear duct infection he had about two months ago, the inner ear nfection he had shortly ago, and now the crusty mouth are all correlated somehow. She mentioned his immune system may be suppressed and the bicillin shots should help.

I’m feeling encouraged! Im reading quite a few good things about the bicillin. He vet did say oher than his crusty mouth and runny eyes, he looks very healthy right now. Yay.

Zeus and Hera went in for their second bicillin shots yesterday – the vet examined his mouth and said it looked considerably better! She wants to do a 3rd shot, and hopefully that will be the last one.

Poor Zeus, I usually feed them right before a vet appointment so they have full bellies – I forgot yesterday. After we got home from the vet, he hopped out of his carrier, into his cage, and IMMEDIATELY started chomping down on hay like, “Geez lady, I’m starving!”

Will you wait a couple weeks and do a blood test to be sure?

We did three rounds of shots, waited two weeks and tested blood, only to find out the penecilan didn’t get everything Then we did four rounds of shots to make sure we nabbed it all!!

Poor Zeus, first he gets poked and prodded and then thinks he’s starving lol!! I always give mine barley or pumpkin cookies after vet visits, but they still hold a grudge for the rest of the day!

Honestly, I’m not sure – the vet hasn’t mentioned doing a blood test, but maybe after the final shot she’ll want him to come in one more time for that. I’ll see what she says next appointment!
