We have two Holland Lops, Nutmeg (female) and Mussolini (Moose-male) that are siblings born December 23, 2014 and adopted together March 7, 2015. Nutmeg was spayed April 7 and Moose was neutered April 14. Both are litter box trained, except occasionally they go on my couch (sigh) and they have always gotten along and were bonded however, today, they are trying to mount each other and not getting along fighting and chasing each other. There’s growling and squeaking and fur flying. We have a 3 story bunny condo so we have separated them for now.

My questions are, is this normal? How do we fix it?

Nutmeg’s personality has always been more curious, adventurous and social. She is always the first to try things and is my little trouble maker. When she’s done being held, she let’s you know. Lately, she has been showing some signs of aggression, growling and lunging, when we violate her personal space within her home and violate the personal space of her toy carrot (apparently her favorite?), but only towards humans, never Moose.

Moose has always been more skittish about being picked up but will let you hold him until you want to put him down. Prior to neutering, he was constantly trying to mount Nutmeg but she just hopped away, never showing any aggression nor irritation. He has typically been the follower, only jumping on the couch after seeing Nutmeg do it. He has never shown any hint of aggression whatsoever.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

        Thank you

It sounds like they need some time apart to let their hormones die down (at least 4 to 6 weeks after spay/neuter). Once that time has passed you can start to re-bond them.

My bonded pair (half-siblings) were spayed/neutered young too, but we had separated them before their surgeries but kept their cages next to each other. We were able to have them together during play time once they healed but due to space issues, they didn’t live together for several months after that. Even while living apart, because their cages were next to each other, they continued to do things together — they slept where their cages touched, ate hay at the same time, etc.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I’ll try that and see how it goes.
