I got my little guy 4 days ago and he’s my first rabbit. His name is Mr Nibbles. The pet store we got him in is a chain but one with a good reputation. they told us that he was 8-11 weeks old and a cross breed. He’s definetly a lop of somesort. he was the smallest rabbit there and having done some research he looks most like a holland lop. He’s a very relaxed bunny. and by the afternoon the same day we got him he was already giving us Bunny purrs. By the second day he was completely confident and doing Binkies all over the living room. He’s an indoor only rabbit and he’s lives in a cage. I work part time so I can let him out frequently. he goes out for 20 minutes twice a day and then for 45 minutes when my boyfriends home to help me watch him. Anyway to the point. Since day one he’s been having alot of cecotropes, we always find them in the morning. And yesterday I noticed he wasn’t producing as many poos as he had been. I took away his treats (which he’d been going crazy for the day before)  and limited his pellets, He was acting his usual self though and by the end of the day he was pooing though not as much. Today I awoke to cecotropes again and more of them this time. He’s not done a single normal poop that I can see. He has peed though (on my bed…) Maybe I’m paranoid but I also feels he’s a tad lathargic. he’s only sitting in his cage. he’s eaten his pellets and nibbled at hay but not much. He was perky when I had him out earlier, but he seems quieter in his cage again. He has produced more cecotropes today twice but no poo. Any advice please? I’m really worried. I’m completely new at this and I want to make sure I’m doing my best for Nibbles. Sorry for such a long paragraph but I thought it best give ALL the information I could.

Are you positive they are cecals and not mushy poops? Cecals will be very dark and look like a blackberry or cluster of grapes neatly packed together. Mushy poop can be dark or light but does not have tiny balls formed in it.

Especially in a young bunny, mushy poop can be a sign of coccidia which is easily treated by a vet, but can be fatal if not treated. Two of my bunnies had coccidia when we got them. 10 days of meds and they were set. Plus, the vet used this visit as their pre-op health check and didn’t charge us for an office visit when they were spayed/neutered.

In any case, its always a good idea to have a new bunny seen by a rabbit savvy vet for a checkup. Not only can any health problems be identified and treated early, it also gives you an opportunity to discuss neutering with the vet and any other health questions you may have, AND establishes you as a client so that you have a vet you can call in case of emergency.

Baby rabbits will always have alot of cecotropes due to their diet – I would not take away anything at this point because you will deal with extra cecotropes.

That being said, it is a good idea to have a vet look at him as well.

I agree with the others about getting him in for a vet check. A baseline visit is important anyways, and it does sound like something may be going on. Keep us posted please!

He’s started pooing! And a lot of it! And he’s perked right up I have him booked at a vet for his vaccinations and a check up on Tuesday but I’ll be keeping a close eye on him in the meantime. He’s such a sweet little guy. He has the most wonderful temperament and I want to make sure I get many wonderful years with him, so thank you for all the advice
