Hi everyone! I’m a newbie and have had my bunny for 2 weeks now. Love him to bits, but as he grows I’m starting to wonder about what breed of rabbit he might be. I was told he was a netherland dwarf but he doesn’t seem to look like the typical nethies I’ve seen online. I wonder if he is a mix or possible a different breed altogether? Would love it someone could give any input.

Do you have an idea how old he is? His ears do seem big for a netherland dwarf.

It can be hard to tell when they are young. He could be a nethie mix or a false dwarf (purebred nethie without the dwarfism gene).

I believe he is about 2.5-3 months old. He has grown a bit in the two weeks I have had him, so I started to wonder whether he could be a mix of possibly a mini-Rex?

He doesn’t look like a rex to me, the fur seems too fluffy and whiskers are straight. I agree with LBJ’s entire comment.

Really appreciate the responses everyone! I’d just like to know in case there are any specific care considerations for a specific breed. Do false dwarfs have any characteristics I should look out for as he grows? I suppose a rabbit-savvy vet might be able to tell the breed if all else fails?

Not that I’m aware of, I think they are just a little bigger than you would normally expect a Nethie to be. I know nethie’s tend to be really high energy, I’m curious whether a larger one (without the dwarf gene) would have the same high energy or not.

Love the name Inkblot, is that his name? It does sorta look like ink got splashed on him. He’s a cutie.

Thanks manic_muncher! His name is Rorschach, after the inkblot test and the Watchmen character. He is super cute and we are totally in love with him! He can be quite energetic in the evening when we let him out of his hutch (which we keep indoors). Other times he seems pretty lethargic, sleeping the afternoons away. It’s so much fun to watch when he’s in a binkying mood though ?

He’s really cute. I live for binkies and bunny 500’s!

Yep, afternoons are bunny sleep time. My lops start waking up around 4, and if I leave work right on time I can sometimes catch Kieko waking up and see the elusive bunny yawn!

I don’t see Rex in him. Even a Rex mix would have some Rex characteristics. I’m sticking with nethie mix or false dwarf nethie. His ears seem big and his face seems long for a true dwarf. The plus side to not having the dwarfism gene is that there is less of a chance of having tooth problems. Yes, they can occur in any bunny, but smooshed faced bunnies tend to be more prone to it.

Yes, I did notice that his head is rather narrow and less round than a regular nethie’s. It becomes more obvious as he grows.

Sometimes I worry that he doesn’t spend enough time outside his hutch. We keep his hutch open for at least 8 hours in the evenings and there’s a pen extension that he can run around in. He seems to enjoy zipping in and out but lounges inside the hutch for the most part. I’ve provided and digging box filled with paper and a few toys with more on the way. Hope he doesn’t get too bored or lonely on his own, as a 2nd bunny isn’t immediately on the cards yet.
