Okay so I have some background, but you can also just jump to the TLR to read questions on bun care.
So my mom was at the pound about two weeks ago, and she fell in love with this bunny. No one in my family has ever had a bunny before, but we do a ton of animal rescue so we’ve had a lot of other animals. Because of this we had a HUGE cage with nothing in it currently.
What pushed my mom over the edge to adopt this bunny was he was about to be put down, he’s missing part of his ear, he’s a muddy brown, had been there for two weeks and the pound “needed room” for another bunny who is very “pretty”. The receptionist was over the moon he wasn’t going to be put down.
Anyway we figured his cage wasn’t big enough so we’ve already built him a newer better one.
        So now to the questions.

        TLR

        1) He’s missing about an inch of one ear, I know this one can’t really be answered but just wondering if anyone has even a theory on how that could have happened.
        2) On the same note, at the base of the shorter ear he’s got this black gritty stuff. Looks kind of like flea dirt, but we can’t find any fleas. And it only on the shorter ear, no where else.
        3) He also has this weird fur on his neck, when you part the fur on his neck there’s these weird short patches. There a lot darker than the rest of him and they look and feel like they were shaved.
        4) He’s crazy friendly, but sometimes when ignored he’ll start thumping! Is this just to get our attention?
        5) We’re getting him neutered soon, right now he marks with pee a lot and throws fits, will this change?
        6) He licks everything! I read that that’s a good thing, be he’s been doing it since day one, is that normal?
        7) When I scratch above his tail he lays down like he’s super comfy and will close his eyes, this is good right? I read they don’t like to be touched there, so I’m confused.

Okay I think I have more but that’s all I can remember right now. I have a picture for number 3, but I’m on mobile and will have to post later.
Also I was hoping if I posted a picture I could get an idea on his breed/mix?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read these guys! Hope I’m not messing anything up with him.

Also sorry if this get formatted weird, I’m going to fix it once I’m on my computer tomorrow.

          1) Could be anything! A member named Cottontail on here has a bunny whos ear was injured by a lawnmower at birth. May just always be part of his mystery
          2) Don’t know about #2–have it checked by a rabbit-savvy vet.
          3) Also don’t know about #3.
          4) It could just be something is ticking him off or scaring him. Or he might want your attention. This is adorable!
          5) This should get waaay better after being neutered. Our boy doesn’t throw fits and the only marking he’s done is when we changed his living space.
          6) Licking is great! He sounds really loving!
          7) Some bunnies are just weird! Pumpkin doesn’t mind her rump being scratched. A lot of bunnies hardly ever close their eyes. Shamrock never does but Pumpkin does all the time when she’s safe, comfy, and happy.

I’m so glad your mom decided to save this little guy! Does he have a name yet or pictures?

His weird dirt will get checked out when he gets fixed, just didn’t know if I should rush to clean it or not.
I assume he thumps from wanting attention then, the only times hes done it is when the whole family is in the room and talking and not talking to HIM, and its always just one thump and then we all look at him and he gets in a better mood.
Hes beyond sweet, honestly I didn’t know bunnies were this nice!

His name is Jerome, which was his pound name but it really fit him well so we kept it. We call him Romy for short, which he comes to when called too.
And heres some pictures! Hes got weird colouring but I think its really neat. The lady at the pound said he was half lop, half american sable, possibly. There was no info about him from his previous owner. They also estimated him at one year old.

And heres the weird fur on his neck.

The weird fur looks like a scar??

Jerome or Romey looks amazing!!!!!! His coloring and his disapproving look in that first pic are amazing!!

My mom thinks he was attacked by something, hes got a bunch of those spots all around his neck.
His whole bottom layer of fur is that orange too, so when you mess up his fur he turns a weird colour XD
                Hes a special boy <3

He is such a handsome boy. The vet can check all the bits like the dirt etc and advise if he needs mite or flea treatment. The short bits do look like fur regrowing over a scar so being attacked would make sense especially given the missing piece of ear. My Starsky loves having his rump scratched and goes into fits of ecstacy rolling his eyes back and trying to lick your hand whilst you scratch. He gets very upset when you stop and looks at you all moon eyed. Looks like he has found himself a loving and wonderful home. Bunnies are amazing family pets and love to interact, they can get very annoyed if ignored or overlooked. They love toys too, you can buy or make all sorts of things. The favourite toys in my place are the plastic baby stacking cups and parrot yucca chews.

He’s a beautiful bunny with black tort coloring! So lucky that your mom found him! Sounds to me like the thumping is just a little attention getting bunnitude!

The short patches of fur could also be fur regrowth from molting too.

On #7, one of my bunnies, Kieko, loves a good butt scratch. She’ll flatten out tooth purr like crazy. Hit the right spot, and she’ll shoot her feet straight out. We joke that she’s got foot eject button back there! With Kieko, if you stop petting or scratching too soon, she nips to let us know we weren’t done. She’s a licker too.

So many bunny compliments, gosh hes gonna get a huge ego if you guys don’t stop.
Oh wait, hes already a giant diva XD
I just saw a chart saying not to scratch their bums but I guess thats not true for all buns. Guess you just have to know your pet!

Hes got a couple toys but he doesn’t seem to interested. We’re trying some fun DIY stuff with him next, which reminds me, can they have hemp rope? Like the craft store stuff you get for bracelets? I read they can have “sisal” string but I have no idea what that even is.

Hemp and sisal are fine. The popular chew of choice in Australia are the Sea Grass door mats from Bunnings. They are plain, untreated and cost a dollar each. Bunnies love them and you generally have to hope another bunny lover hasn’t beaten you to the floor covering aisle at Bunnings (Huge Hardware and Homewares outlet in Australia)

I just want to say that I think he’s a beautiful bunny and let noone call him a muddy brown again, he’s tort =) On everything I second what the others have said.

My bunnies are not interested in toys, but they do like cardboard-box houses. Make at least two entrances/exits (a bunny always wants an alternative way out). It makes a good hidey-house + it offers the opportunity to re-style and/or destroy the hidey-house, sth that my bunnies are very fond of.

Good luck! Thank you for giving him a home!

Your bunny has beautiful color fur! The missing ear tip could be a result from a fight with his litter mates, or some other rabbit or animal he came in contact with in his former home. And a fight/attack could explain that shorter fur on his neck.

My bunnies usually quickly lose interest in the balls or wooden toys that I buy for them. Sometimes a simple thing like a cardboard tube from a paper towel roll will be more interesting to them. Be careful if you do give him any of those. Some brands have a lot of glue on the tube where the last sheet is attached, and other brands seem to have no glue.

It’s wonderful that your mom rescued this bunny.
