        • Are you new to rabbits or have you been a bunny slave for a long while now? Bram is my first rabbit
        • What made you choose to have a rabbit companion in your life?

Bram was an unexpected addition and it’s a long story about how he came into my life. A little over 4 weeks ago, my parents were moving me from North Dakota back to Wisconsin in their RV. It was 1 in the morning and we were about 2 minutes from home when my dad yells “Did you see those bunnies!” I was half asleep and didn’t know what he was talking about but he stopped the RV in the middle of the road and he and my mom got out. A minute later, my mom came back and told me they were domesticated rabbits and that we needed to catch them. It was the middle of the night, about -10 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground but over the course of an hour, we were able to catch 7 of them. There were 2 left that ran into a thicket of brambles and we were unable to get them that night.

The next morning, I walked back to the place we had left them and spotted one of the rabbits. I tried to chase him but he was too fast for me to catch him because of the brambles and the snow. I did notice that he would return to once spot to lay down and eat so I made my way over there and sat down nearby. He eventually did return to the spot and I slowly inched closer and closer until he was able to smell my hand. I started to pet him and eventually was able to pick him up. The other rabbit was no where to be seen so I went back home. When my mom came home from work, we went back and we spotted the last rabbit but after an hour we were unable to catch him so we sadly left him there. We called the local no-kill humane society to see if they could take in 8 rabbits and they said yes so that evening we dropped them off.

The next morning I went back and promptly got my car stuck in a ditch but I didn’t worry about it because I was determined to get the last bunny. For about an hour and a half I wasn’t able to and I was getting really disheartened. I called my dad to say I didn’t know if I could do it and that I was stuck in the snow. He told me that I would just have to walk back home to get a shovel and dig myself out. That didn’t seem all that appealing so I figured I would just continue trying to get the rabbit. About 5 minutes later, I noticed that he had dug himself a pretty deep tunnel in the snow. He had done that earlier and I had tried to get him out of it but he wasn’t deep enough and was able to just shoot out of the snow. This time I figured he wouldn’t be able to do that so I collapsed his tunnel and was finally able to pick him up. As I was walking to the road, a man in a pickup stopped and asked if I needed help getting my car out of the ditch. I said I did and he luckily had straps. Unfortunately he had just had double knee replacement surgery and couldn’t bend down to attach them but lucky for me, the driver of a garbage truck stopped to ask if we needed help and we were able to get my car out. As it was all getting set up, the man with the pickup asked what I was doing and I said that I had just caught a rabbit. He replied that he had seen them on the side of the road 3 or 4 days ago and thought they were puppies. That meant that they had been out there huddled on the side of the road for at least 2 days! All together there were 2 New Zealands, 5 English Spots, and 2 Mini Rexes. All of them had frostbite on their ears except for the 2 New Zealands.

So I took the final one home. At this time, I knew absolutely nothing about rabbits. I believed the stereotype that all rabbits were loveable cuddlers. The first 8 that I caught didn’t really dispel me of this myth because they were all quite sociable and would come right up to me and sometimes even jump in my lap. The last one was different though. He was very skittish and even bit me once. I was nervous about taking him to the humane society even though it was a no-kill because I figured he either wouldn’t be adopted or someone would adopt him, realize that he was a more aloof rabbit and be bounced from home to home. I was able to convince my mom that keeping him would be the best thing to do and that’s how I wound up getting a rabbit companion!

His fur is so soft! I just wish he’d let me pet him more. Maybe with time.
