Black-furred bunny owners: Does your black bun have black toenails?

We took a stab at clipping Rocky’s nails tonight and I was flabbergasted at where to begin?! The line of where to cut Pumpkin’s nails is super obvious but Rocky’s looks pure black all the way down!

We go to the vet on Wednesday and I’ll ask him for some help too, but any advice from you guys?

Dampen the fur around the nails. Hold a flashlight or other bright light under the nails. Press press clip method. At least these are things my son has done. All three of mine have some nails that are black.

You can also use the method I use. I take them to the vet, or havevrhe vet tech come to my house and do the nails ! My favorite tech is coming to our house for the first time on Monday. Vet charges $22 per bunny for nail trims. The tech charges $15 to come to the house and will do whatever we want. Obviously I’ll pay her more than just $15, especially since the bunnies will be on their “turf” and likely notvas cooperative!

I should add that even when the vet tech cuts their nails, I have to do the holding of the bunny! Hubby will hold if he’s home, but conveniently he won’t be home on Monday!

Porky is agouti, but he’s got black nails. Have powder to stop the bleeding very handy, even my vet has accidentally drawn blood. Resign yourself to the idea that his nails are just not ever going to be as short and perfect as Pumpkins are. Before you start to actually cut the nail give the clipper a little gentle squeeze, if the bunny flinchs, your are probably too close to the quick, if he just acts his normal amount of annoyed at being groomed you are probably safe.

Thankfully, Meki’s nails are are a slightly lighter color on their underneaths, but even so that doesn’t help when I’m not laying on my back clipping her nails above me! I usually take the nail clippers and trim her toe fur slightly so I have a good view of the nail, and I use the press-press-clip method religiously so she has a chance to yank herself away if I’m too close to the quick.

Thanks for the tips!! I really like the idea of dampening the hair around and/or trimming the hair around the nails. This is a great tip for Pumpkin as it’s really hard to find her nails through all the hair sometimes. We’ll give Rocky another go this weekend!!

Holding a flashlight under the nail helps too with dark nails

My Bridge bunny Velvet had black nails and the flashlight tip worked really well.

Moxie’s nails are black. :^/ The flashlight technique doesn’t really work for me… And the press press clip technique doesn’t work either because Moxie will frantically flail around if I even come near her with the clippers…

I’ll let you know if I discover a technique that really works though!
