Any tips on getting a rabbit to eat after a spay? We’ve got all her favourites, but she seems to only be interested in chewing on her block of wood. If we have to force feed, can anyone provide tips on how so we can avoid injury to herself?

How is she doing today? Did the vet give her any pain meds?

Here’s a good link. The “cut tipped syringe” is the method I use with Oxbow Critical Care. Make sure not to put too much in and to put it in bunny’s mouth very slowly, let her chew and swallow before offering more. It’s very dangerous if bunny aspirates (the liquid goes into the lungs).

She spent the day at the vet. She did eat a small piece of banana this evening. If she hasn’t eaten the lettuce or hay left out for her, the vet said to bring her back in the morning. Fingers crossed!!

Called my mum this morning to check on Lily. She did eat some lettuce and hand fed some hay. So hopefully things are starting to move again. Thanks for the well wishes! My mum was crying & felt so guilty. Even though we all know it wasn’t her fault.

She’s going back to the vet today because her poop is still soft. Vet says he wants regular poop. Poor girl. I’m hoping this is the last visit. Even I’m starting to feel guilty for getting her fixed.

Sending you positive vibes and hungry vibes for your girl! My little Hera took at least 3-4 days before she was eating/pooping normally again after her spay.

Absolutely do not feel guilty for getting her spayed – female bunnies have a huge risk of cancer if left intact. You did the right thing!

You can ask the vet about pain meds (if she’s not already on them), and also gut motility drugs. Zeus and Hera were both on I think it was called cisapride after their neuter/spays. It’s supposed to stimulate the gut and make it start moving.

Well the surgery was on Tues. She was at the vet all day Thursday and had 2 injections, 1 for pain & 1 to stimulate her gut. She’s spending the day there again today. Hopefully this weekend things will start going again.
She’s such a lovely girl. Gives kisses & licks every morning.

You can get a soft tipped baby spoon (probably even at the dollar store) and slide it into her mouth. If some spills off you can just scoop it with the spoon and re-feed. This if sometimes preferrable to buns, plus the chewing action may be helpful to the overall eating process. Sometimes they’ll just chew on what you put in front of them out of annoyance. We all have our favorites…blueberry baby food, canned pumpkin, mashes banana. Hopefully you can have her home instead of at the vet for the weekend. You’ll do a much better job than they can do, simply because you can devote your time to many, many feedings. Also try and keep her out of the cage to move around a bit when you can. Obviously, we don’t want bunny 500’s at this point in time

Happy to say Lily is totally back to normal. She’s eating, pooping, and nudging & nipping for cuddles. Thx!!!!
