Help! I found a little black short hair bunny running round my back yard. I’m in MN. so didn’t want to leave it out all night. I have him/her in a cat carry porter. Both the black and my Jersey wooly 5 yo spayed Velvet are getting to know each other velvet is loose blacky in cage. No growling or meaness, a bit of fear, and Velvet does not seemed pleased with me. I’m planning on litter training the black and keeping both. Does it sound like they might co-exist? I held the black one up to velvets face, the black got scared but no grunting or meaness from either. Should I keep blacky in the cat porter overnight in same room with velvet and let them bond thru the cage or will I need to get blacky fixed too? not sure how to go about blending them.   Thanks in advance.

If you just found the little guy/girl, I would be cautious about introducing Velvet to it just yet. Have you contacted your local vet or humane society to see if anyone is missing their bunny? Also, since he/she has been out on their own it might be good to have a check-up to determine age/gender/health before introduction, just to make sure that nothing they might have will pass to your current bun.

As far as the bonding process goes, I’m still new to that myself, but most on here are under the general agreement that bonding goes more smoothly and tends to have better results if done when both bunnies have been de-sexed and have had time for their hormones to die down.

I would suggest either keeping him/her in the carrier tonight, or choosing a small room that you can close off for them away from your other bun.

Hey Velvet. Glad you rescued the little black bunny!! If it were me I would take little Blacky to a vet before starting the bonding process. Mostly, because Pumpkin had gotten out with her previous owner and contracted rabbit syphilis while she was running amuck. This is highly contagious and Blacky could have picked up anything else while on the loose. If you want to bond the too, I would recommend getting Blacky spayed/neutered as that will really help with the bonding process and territorial issues.

Right now it might be a good idea to keep them separated. It could freak Blacky out to be caged in with no where to go while another bunny is hopping around him. And it could make Velvet really territorial to have Blacky in her space. If they decide to get aggressive they could hurt each other through the bars of cages, so anything like this will need to be supervised.

After Blacky is checked out and you get him/her spayed/neutered, you’ll want to introduce them to each other in neutral territory. Have you checked out the bonding section here on BinkyBunny? It’s so useful and informative! Good luck!!

Congrats on your surprise addition! I wouldn’t do any introductions yet, or let them cross contaminate until the new one has seen a vet-just keep them seperate and you can introduce after the spay/neuter health exam.

I would first put up posters and maybe some online ads. Someone may be missing the little guy!

I agree with the others on both points. Someone may be missing him. And even if it does appear as though no one is looking for him and you decide to keep him, you’re going to want to make sure he doesn’t have something that could be passed on to your current bun. Better safe than sorry, I say.
