        Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice form anyone who normally soaks their rabbits hay? Two of my buns have had runny noses recently, took them to the vets where they were prescribed antibiotics to clear it up and the vet suggested soaking their hay to get rid of any dust. Tried it today and they seem to be loving it and has gone down well. I took a chunk of Timothy hay out of the big bale and soaked it for 5 minutes, they left the excess water to run out over night, i gave them their usual amount this morning and have enough left over for tomorrow.

I’m just wondering if the left over amount will be safe to give to them 24 hours after soaking? I’m guessing it won’t go mouldy in that amount of time but just want to check with anyone who has experience with wet hay?

        Thanks in advance

        Ree (Pickles, Parker and Poppy)

Put the soaked hay in the fridge. It will keep better if kept cool. I don’t know if you’ve done hay-infusion in school biology, it’s when you put hay in water and wait a couple of days for amoebas and other unicellular creatures to multiply so that you can see them in a microscope. Anyhow, it means hay has lots of life in it =) So it’s probably best to prepare the daily ratio more or less to order and keep the the hay you’ve already soaked cool until you serve it.

This is just my guess. I don’t soak hay but I often pick fresh grass for my buns and it doesn’t keep well unless refridgerated.

I’ve never heard of soaking hay, but have heard of people giving the hay a good shake and spritzing it with water from a spray bottle to remove/keep the dust down.
