So I read on the fruit/veggie list that rabbits can have basil. Does that mean ANY type of basil? I bought some Sweet Basil seeds and planted them, in hopes to grow some basil for Moxie. (As a treat)

Any input/information would be great! (And any tips from somebody who has a green thumb? lol )

I also bought some lettuce, spinach and cilantro seeds.

I think all types of basil are fine. As far as gardening, my thumb is pretty black, but I hope you can get it to work.

Moxie — one of the veggie lists I have says all types of basil are ok. Basil is easy to grow and all of my bunnies live it, and it smells great. However, keep it on a separate windowsill in a separate room and keep a very close eye on the undersides of the leaves. If you start to see any black or purple spots on the underside of any leaves, destroy the plant and any seeds you may have left. Do a forum search for “basil downy mildew” and you’ll see what I ran into last summer.

Can Pumpkin and Shamrock come eat out of Moxies garden????? Lucky bun! Poor Rocky is still eating salads out of paper bowl and Moxie has a gourmet garden at her beck and call!

Ha ha sure LLH! (If I can get it to grow! ) I’ve always planted outdoor gardens, but never an indoor one. I’m afraid the soil won’t be deep enough ect. So…. let’s hope it grows lol! I was going to plant kale too, but no matter how hard I looked I couldn’t find ANY! If these don’t grow Moxie will just have to wait for the 3 feet of snow to melt so I can plant a garden outside lol! (which we are, but thought it’d be cool for Moxie to have her own indoor one.)

JR— Yes I think I kinda remember the thread you had going. I’ll go look for it now!

                LEL— Ok thank you!

JR— I read your thread about the basil, and will definitely keep an eye like a hawk on it!

Moxie — sweet basil is the one mine love and the one I grew, unfortunately its also the one most probe to basil downy mildew. I’ve never tried other types of basil with them, mainly because sweet basil is the one I normally see here. It smells sooo good too! One of the stores here sells plants that you put in a window, but they never seem to live long. I just buy them then toss when they die. This week I have dandelion, sweet basil, and wheat grass. They look pretty too!

I love Basil, but it doesn’t seem to be very hardy.

I grew basil, peppermint, and spearmint in large pots on my patio. The basil did really well until the mildew took over. Both mints went crazy, but because the mildew could spread to them, I tossed them all. According to what I read, I’ll have to wait at least 2 years before trying again.

Oh, the basil downy mildew infects other plants via airborne spores, and is transported via infected basil seeds.

Why do you have to wait 2 years? Is it because there could still be moldy spores floating around or something?

My Jakers LOVES basil (even more than banana…gasp!) You can buy small plants at most grocery stores in the produce section for a few dollars; it’s organic, gmo-free, and not difficult to grow.
