So one of our bunnies, Frankie, has periods where he gets constipated, and it’s always it seems due to eating something too rich (like a teeny tiny piece of apple), and he gets the sticky poops stuck and just … doesn’t … poop for a long time. Well, we know this is bad, and when it last happened, it hadn’t been long enough to be too worried, but considering he’s a pooping machine, it had been long enough to be concerned. So I was researching options (I gave him canned pumpkin, I bought but hadn’t yet received critical care) … and I came across bunny tummy massage. And I remembered that had helped when my kids were babies, so I figured, why not?

So I put Frankie on my lap, and I started massaging his tummy (he sat upright, my hands wrapped under him). After about 5 minutes a tiny, sticky, stinky poop came out (stuck to his fur). And then a minute or so later, another. After maybe 10 minutes, about 10 had come out. Then a sticky but kinda-normalish poop. Then getting more normal. After about 20 minutes, I had a pile of pretty normal, round, not-sticky, bunny poops and deemed him ok to return to hopping about.

I share this only in case anyone else has a similar problem. He doesn’t seem to have problems with fur-related blockages, and he never stops eating, including of course unlimited hay and water, and he acts normal – he just sometimes doesn’t pass all of his sticky poops and he starts to get pretty constipated. So it’s not a cure-all, but it was amazing, and helped him incredibly. I hope this helps someone, which is why I share it. 🙂

I’m amazed it all happened right there on your lap! You’ve got my vote for Poop Queen! Don’t suppose you do poop house calls?!?!

Lol … no house calls. It was an extreme act of love to let my bunny get his sticky poops all over me (and him). He even peed on me during the process (he’s not very genteel), and I KEPT MASSAGING HIS POOP EVEN WHILE I HAD HIS PEE ON ME. I do deserve some kind of award, that’s for sure.
