i know it’s toxic for them but my bun just found one that i missed while putting away the groceries.. she didn’t get too into it before i caught her and she basically just ate  a few inches skin off of one

i have an appointment for the vet tomorrow morning but should i worry about this in the meantime?

All I can suggest is making sure she eats lots of hay, veggies and water to keep her system going. Keep a very close eye on to make sure she is acting fine and eating and drinking.

            Persin toxicity and animal species
Those of you whose canine and feline companions enjoy the occasional avocado indulgence can breathe a sigh of relief: persin does not adversely affect dogs or cats.

The primary danger of avocados to dogs and cats concerns the possibility of swallowing the large pit, which can cause a blockage or obstruction in the animal’s esophagus, stomach or intestinal tract. Be sure to exercise common sense and never let your dog or cat eat a whole avocado or the avocado pit.

But, persin is toxic to birds (e.g. canaries, parakeets, cockatiels and large parrots), rabbits, horses and ruminants (e.g.cattle, sheep, goats) and so no part of the avocado should be fed to these species.

Signs of persin poisoning in birds include:
            • Inability to perch
            • Difficulty breathing
            • Fluid around the heart and lungs
            • Liver and kidney failure
            • Death

Signs of toxicity in rabbits include:
            • Inflammation of the mammary glands
            • Decreased milk production
            • Difficulty breathing
            • Fluid around heart
            • Heart rhythm problems
            • Death

Do you have an pet emergency hotline there? They may be able advise what the best course of action is.

You can call poison control, they know about pets too.

                  thanks folks

i think she’s going to be fine..

treatment is supportive and since she’s not showing signs of poisoning she should be alright.. technically she won’t be totally out of the woods until tomorrow but i’m confident

my friend had a rabbit back in the day and she left it with a well meaning friend who fed her avocados and she died within hours

dennis only ate a tiny bit so i’m thankful for that

such a careless mistake that can so easily end in needless pain suffering

GEE! I am SO pleased I read this…. I had NO idea!
We ‘love’ Avocado in our house, but don’t have it often as they are so expensive, bugga!
Because they are so expensive and we love them so much I doubt I would have given any to Henry…… lol!

But super good to know – I won’t feel guilty not sharing! Ha ha ha!

Glad to hear that your bun is going to be okay, Scuba! It is good to know, because somehow I completely glossed over avocado being on the toxic list! Luckily, I’m like AH, in that I don’t have them in my house often, and chances are they’d be eaten by people instead of offered up to Pete (not that that would stop him from trying it I’m sure!)

I was surprised to see it’s not actually toxic to cats though. I always heard that it was toxic, though not severely. I remember at one point when I was younger my siamese cat getting into my dads guacamole and dad said, “Don’t worry. He probably won’t like it.” Before we knew it he had eaten about a 1/4 cup of the stuff and was looking for more! He didn’t suffer any ill-effects from it though… and is actually still around at the ripe age of 16 (will be 17 this year) at my parents house.

And thanks, LBJ, for posting the toxicity signs!

I actually don’t like avocados (although my hubby does) and we have an avacado tree. Help yourself, there are so many, lol! It’s good to put it out that buns can’t have them, though. Doesn’t seem like it should be harmful, so it is an easy mistake for a person to make.

When I make my way over to steal Lionel, I’ll grab a suitcase full of Avo’s tooooo! YUM!!! I can’t believe you have a tree Amanda? I’ll leave you some Mulberry’s from my tree and some leaves for Roxi – the Mulberry leaf is very healthy for bunnies! Lionel can eat his leaves when I get him home…..

                            Lol!

We have locally grown avocados and mangoes in abundance at the moment. So I make a bit of a pig of myself, especially avocado with some king prawns and a vinegrette, yummy. However, I knew they were bad for buns so they never even get to see the avo’s. I got one the other day the size of a rock
melon and it was perfect all the way through and soft and buttery…..

I’m leaving now Roberta – I should be there in a few days (I have to drive, not sure if the airports are open?)!
AVO and KING PRAWNS – big time YUMMY! OMG my mouth is watering…….

PS Roberta – I mean it, save some for me!

Talking about Mango… is Mango ok for bunnies??? Please say a little bit won’t hurt……

PS – Seeing you mentioned Rockmelon…. that would go a treat for dessert with ice cream. OMG – this is so cruel, I swear my tummy is rumbling, whatever I have for dinner tonight will NOT compensate!

BTW, it’s the hubby who eats Mango, and he shares everything with Henry – DOH!

                                      How’s bunny?

Avocado is toxic to pretty much all animals, so even though I love it-I don’t buy it-just in case.
BUT I saw this article a while back about this dog who lived on an avocado farm and ate them constantly. Visitors talked about his shiny coat. So I don’t know, maybe like grapes are toxic to dogs, sometimes in certain amounts but not always-avocado is the same?

Hope all is well! And in future-do as I do-eat other people’s avocado’s and don’t bring them home!

i made guacamole today for a dinner party and noticed one avo was missing! after a long search i’m pretty sure i left it at the grocery store because i made extra sure to but the bag in a place she couldn’t reach.. but i’m so paranoid now i might stop buyhing them all together ..

hey are sneaky buggers. You just have to remember with ANY purchase you need to put it up high if you aren’t unpacking immediately, that includes electrical items. Everything Ibuy goes straight into a bunny free zone for unpacking and distribution.
